The 29-year-old’s achievement eclipsed the previous record of 4.21m held by Rosy Meena Paulraj, which had stood since 2022. More than just a marginal improvement, Baranica’s leap symbolised years of persistence, as she had been consistently chasing the elusive 4.20m mark. Speaking after her record-breaking performance, Baranica expressed both relief and joy at finally achieving a long-standing goal. Having come close on multiple occasions in the past, she credited her breakthrough to determination and timing, describing the day as one where everything fell perfectly into place.

Her event did not end with the record. Buoyed by confidence, Baranica attempted to push the bar even further to 4.25m, aiming to extend her own mark. While she fell short on that attempt, her effort underlined her ambition and growing stature in Indian athletics.

The competition, hosted at the Indoor Stadium within Kalinga Stadium, marked the first edition of the National Indoor Athletics Championships, an initiative that is expected to play a crucial role in developing athletes for global indoor events. The controlled indoor environment provides athletes like Baranica a platform to refine technique and adapt to international standards.

Baranica’s performance also highlights the steady rise of women’s athletics in India. With increasing opportunities, infrastructure, and exposure, athletes are pushing boundaries and setting new benchmarks across disciplines. Her record-breaking vault is not just a personal triumph but also a sign of the evolving competitive landscape in women’s field events. The event was inaugurated by Suraj Suryabanshi, Odisha’s Sports and Youth Services Minister, who emphasised the significance of hosting such competitions. He noted that Bhubaneswar’s growing reputation as a sporting hub will be further strengthened with future global events, including ambitions to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
