A dramatic finish, an unbeaten run, and a home crowd to celebrate with- Hockey Jharkhand once again stamped their authority on the national stage, successfully defending their crown at the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2026 in Ranchi.
In a closely contested Division ‘A’ final, the hosts edged past Hockey Madhya Pradesh 2-1 in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the final whistle. The victory not only underlined Jharkhand’s dominance at the sub-junior level but also highlighted the depth of emerging talent in Indian women’s hockey.
The final began at an intense pace, with Jharkhand looking to assert control early. Their intent paid off within the opening minutes when Sugan Sanga (5′) converted a penalty corner, giving the hosts a crucial lead. The early breakthrough set the tone for a fiercely competitive encounter, with both sides displaying strong defensive organization and quick transitions.
Hockey Madhya Pradesh, however, showed resilience and composure. After weathering early pressure, they gradually grew into the game and found their equaliser in the second half. Nammi Geethasri (37′) struck to bring her side back into contention, setting up a tense final quarter where both teams pushed relentlessly for the winning goal.
As the clock ticked down and the possibility of a shootout loomed, Jharkhand found their moment of brilliance. Sewani Kerketta (56′) delivered the decisive blow, scoring a field goal in the closing minutes to seal a memorable victory for the home side. Earlier in the day, the battle for third place also delivered plenty of action, as the Hockey Association of Odisha secured the bronze medal with a convincing 4-2 win over Uttar Pradesh Hockey. Odisha set the tone early in the match, with Priyanka Minz (8′, 18′) scoring twice to give her side a strong advantage. Building on that momentum, Priya Princess Ekka (22′) and Archana Kujur (27′) added to the tally, effectively putting the contest out of reach before halftime.
Odisha’s attacking efficiency and control in midfield proved too much for Uttar Pradesh to handle. Uttar Pradesh did manage to respond, with captain Arika Kumari (29′) converting a penalty stroke to reduce the deficit. Later in the match, Mamta Kumari (58′) added another goal through a penalty corner. However, the late surge was not enough to overturn Odisha’s early dominance, as they comfortably secured a place on the podium.
The tournament, hosted in Ranchi, once again showcased the growing competitiveness and talent pool in sub-junior women’s hockey across India.
