A new era has arrived in English women’s football as Manchester City finally reclaimed the Women’s Super League crown, ending Chelsea’s dominance and lifting their first league title in a decade. City were officially crowned champions on Wednesday after Arsenal dropped crucial points in a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion, confirming that the North London club could no longer catch the league leaders with only a handful of matches remaining.

The triumph marks Manchester City’s first Women’s Super League title since their famous unbeaten campaign in 2016 and brings an end to Chelsea’s remarkable run of six consecutive league championships. Since City’s last title-winning season, Chelsea had established themselves as the dominant force in English women’s football under Emma Hayes, winning multiple domestic trophies and consistently competing in Europe.

This latest success represents a major turning point for Manchester City and a statement of intent under new head coach Andree Jeglertz, who delivered the league title in his very first season in charge.

City currently sit at the top of the standings with 52 points from 21 matches and cannot be overtaken after Arsenal failed to secure victory against Brighton. Arsenal needed to win all their remaining matches to keep their title hopes alive, but the draw handed City the trophy before their final league game against West Ham on May 16.

“The girls have met every challenge in front of them head on and have been an absolute joy to coach this season,” City coach Andre Jeglertz said in a statement released by the club. “In the good moments and the bad, they’ve always stuck together and found a way to win – something that all great champions do.”

Manchester City’s title-winning campaign has been built on consistency, attacking football and dominant performances against direct rivals. Their emphatic 5-1 victory over Chelsea earlier this year proved to be one of the defining moments of the season and established City as genuine title favourites.

They also produced memorable wins against Arsenal and Manchester United, showing composure in high-pressure matches throughout the campaign.

One of the standout performers for City this season has been Jamaican striker Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, who has once again established herself among the best forwards in world football. Shaw scored 19 goals in 21 league appearances and played a crucial role in City’s attacking dominance throughout the season.

The title victory is even more impressive considering the transition the club underwent last summer. Jeglertz replaced Gareth Taylor as permanent head coach after interim boss Nick Cushing guided the side temporarily. Despite entering a highly competitive league environment, the Swedish manager adapted quickly and transformed City into the most consistent side in the division. His tactical approach, calm leadership and ability to build a balanced squad were central to City’s success. The team combined experienced leaders with emerging talent and maintained one of the strongest defensive and attacking records in the league. “Helping guide this team to the WSL title is something I will never forget. The girls have met every challenge in front of them head-on and have been an absolute joy to coach this season.”

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible effort, belief, passion and dedication of my colleagues, the players and the fans. They’ve all been a credit to the club as well as themselves and deserve to celebrate this amazing moment. But this isn’t the end of the road – we still have plenty to fight for this season and in the coming years. I’m excited by what the future holds for this amazing group of players and this fantastic club.”

City’s rise to the top comes during a period of significant growth for the Women’s Super League. Attendances, television audiences and global visibility for women’s football in England have increased dramatically in recent years, with clubs investing heavily in facilities, player development and recruitment.

Manchester City’s success this season also reflects the growing competitiveness of the WSL. While Chelsea dominated the league for much of the previous decade, teams like Arsenal, Manchester United and City have continued to strengthen their squads, creating one of the most competitive women’s leagues in the world.

Arsenal manager Renee Slegers admitted disappointment after her side failed to keep the title race alive. “Congratulations to Man City who have now won the league. It was disappointing today. Credit to Brighton who are a very tough opponent to play against and they did well, but we have to look at ourselves and we are very disappointed.”

Despite missing out on the title, Arsenal still enjoyed a strong European campaign, reaching the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals before being eliminated by French giants Lyon. For Manchester City, however, this season could still become even more memorable. The club remains in contention for additional silverware and now has the opportunity to build a new dynasty in English women’s football.

After waiting ten years to return to the summit, Manchester City have once again established themselves as champions of England.
