The tournament served as an important opportunity to secure spots for the upcoming European Championships in Paris.

American star swimmer, Gretchen Walsh broke the record of her compatriot, Kate Douglass in the women’s 50m freestyle category.

Walsh clocked in a time of 23.55 seconds during the final of Sette Colli Meet, she shaved 0.04 seconds off the previous world record set just 9 days before by Kate Douglass.

Douglass had set the record of 23.59 seconds in the women’s 50m freestyle on June 19th, 2026, at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis.

Walsh and Douglass are former teammates at the University of Virginia. Douglass uploaded a photo of Walsh on Instagram with the text, “was fun while it lasted” and a handshake emoji.

Behind Walsh, Sarah Sjostrom secured the silver medal (23.86), while Sara Curtis secured the bronze (24.09).

“I’m here,” Walsh told reporters after her world record-breaking race on Sunday (28 June). “I’m going to try to keep breaking world records in everything.”
