Verein für Leibesübungen Wolfsburg, commonly known as VfL Wolfsburg, is a German women’s football club based in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony. The club was founded in 1973 as VfR Eintracht Wolfsburg and was one of the founding members of the Frauen-Bundesliga. Later, in 2003, the team joined VfL Wolfsburg.
The first Frauen-Bundesliga season under the new name was in 2003-04, when they finished eighth on the table; the next season, the team was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in 12th place but gained direct promotion in the following 2005–06 season. They were runners-up in the league in 2011-12.
In the 2012-13 season, Wolfsburg won their first Bundesliga title and the UEFA Women’s Champions League. After 1. FFC Frankfurt, they were the second team to complete the treble by winning the domestic cup. It was in this year that both men’s and women’s football clubs from the same nation completed the treble, the men’s club being Bayern Munich.
Wolfsburg was also the first German football team to win back-to-back UEFA Women’s Championships. The club plays their home games at the AOK Stadium, and the club’s nickname is Die Wölfinnen (The She-wolves).
