Arsenal’s latest addition is not simply another name added to an increasingly ambitious squad. Élisa De Almeida arrives at the Emirates with five years of Paris Saint-Germain experience, 52 France caps and a sizable European résumé, giving Renée Slegers another experienced option as Arsenal prepare for a demanding campaign on multiple fronts. Arsenal have completed the permanent signing of the France international from PSG, with the 28-year-old defender making the move to England after 154 appearances for the Parisian club. PSG confirmed her departure after five seasons in which she won two Coupe de France titles, in 2022 and 2024, while also featuring in the club’s Champions League campaigns.
The timing of the move is significant. Arsenal have been building a squad capable of competing across domestic and European competitions, and De Almeida’s arrival adds another layer of experience to Slegers’ defensive options. She is primarily a centre-back but can also operate at right-back, giving Arsenal tactical flexibility depending on the opponent and the demands of the game. Her mobility and ability to defend one-on-one situations make her particularly suited to a side that is often expected to play on the front foot.
De Almeida’s career has been rooted in French football. Born in Châtenay-Malabry in the Paris region, she began playing football at Épinay before progressing through the French system. She made her senior debut with FCF Juvisy at 18 and later represented Paris FC and Montpellier before joining PSG in 2021. Her five seasons in Paris provided the defender with regular exposure to pressure at the highest level.
PSG reached the Women’s Champions League semi-finals in 2022 and 2024, experiences that gave De Almeida an understanding of what is required when the margins become increasingly small in European competition. Her final months in Paris also underlined her importance to the squad. De Almeida started at right-back in PSG’s 2025-26 Coupe de France final against OL Lyonnes and had also featured prominently during the club’s run to the final.
That versatility could prove particularly valuable for Arsenal. The Gunners have ambitions of challenging for major honours, and defensive depth becomes crucial when domestic fixtures are combined with Champions League football. Arsenal’s 2026-27 European campaign will see them face opponents including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the league phase, placing significant demands on the squad. De Almeida also arrives with considerable international experience.
She progressed through France’s youth teams and was part of the side that won the UEFA Women’s Under-19 European Championship in 2016. She made her senior France debut in 2019 and has since represented the national team at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and UEFA Women’s EURO 2025. PSG list her at 52 senior appearances and five international goals.
For a player who has spent much of her career in France, however, the move to England is about more than simply changing leagues. “I’m so excited to join Arsenal,” De Almeida said. “This is a very big club and I can’t wait to get started.” There is also a personal connection behind the transfer. “I grew up watching Arsenal and seeing French players wear this jersey. So I’m proud to take this step.”
That reference to Arsenal’s French history is significant. The club’s identity has long been influenced by French football, from the Arsène Wenger era to the French players who followed him to North London. De Almeida now becomes part of that lineage, but with a very different challenge ahead.
She will have to adapt quickly to the pace and physical demands of the Women’s Super League while also competing for a place in a defence filled with international experience. Arsenal’s decision to recruit her also reflects the wider growth of the WSL transfer market. English clubs have increasingly become destinations for established European internationals, with Arsenal themselves making several significant additions during the summer window. The Guardian reported that English clubs were responsible for a major share of the spending in the women’s international transfer market this summer.
Arsenal have signed experience, not just cover. The most interesting aspect of De Almeida’s arrival is that Arsenal are not recruiting purely for numbers. At 28, she enters North London at a point in her career where experience can be as valuable as potential. She has played in title races, domestic cup finals, Champions League knockout matches and major international tournaments. She has also spent years operating in a PSG environment where expectations are immediate and every match carries significance.
That matters for Arsenal. Slegers does not simply need another defender. She needs players who can step into difficult matches without requiring months to understand the pressure surrounding the club. De Almeida’s ability to play centrally or at right-back could also become an important tactical weapon. Arsenal can rotate their defensive structure without necessarily changing the overall approach, while De Almeida’s pace and experience should help when the Gunners push their defensive line higher up the pitch.
The move therefore looks less like a headline signing and more like a calculated squad-building decision. Arsenal are chasing trophies. De Almeida has already learned what it takes to compete for them. Now, she has to prove she can help the Gunners go one step further.
