Aryna Sabalenka Suffers Wuhan Open Shock Exit After Ann Li Comeback

Aryna Sabalenka’s search for a return to winning form suffered another setback at the Wuhan Open 2026 as unseeded American Ann Li produced a determined comeback to defeat the top seed 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in the round of 32 on Wednesday. The defeat added to a difficult run for the Belarusian, whose recent results have raised questions about her consistency heading into the final stretch of the 2026 tennis season.

Sabalenka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, entered the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan looking to regain momentum after a disappointing China Open campaign earlier this month. Instead, she was forced to leave a tournament where she has enjoyed considerable success, having lifted the trophy in 2018, 2019 and 2024. The loss was particularly striking given Sabalenka’s commanding start. She secured the opening set 6-3, but Li gradually found her rhythm, capitalised on the world number one’s inconsistency and forced a deciding set. The American then held her nerve through a tense finish to register one of the most significant victories of her career.

Li’s comeback gathered momentum in the second set, where she recovered from a 4-2 deficit to level the contest at one set apiece. Having struggled to contain Sabalenka’s power early in the match, the American began to apply greater pressure and took advantage of the top seed’s errors to force a deciding set. The third set turned into a test of composure and resilience. Sabalenka found herself trailing 4-1 and appeared in serious danger of an early exit. She took a medical timeout before returning to the court and mounting a spirited fightback.

The Belarusian saved five match points and held serve to make it 5-3, briefly raising hopes of another turnaround. However, Li refused to let the opportunity slip away. Despite needing multiple chances to close out the match, she remained composed and converted her 10th match point to seal a memorable victory after two hours and 27 minutes. The statistical difference between the players proved significant. Sabalenka committed 44 unforced errors, compared with Li’s 28, underlining the cost of the top seed’s inconsistent execution. The match statistics also recorded eight aces for Li against two for Sabalenka, while the American committed four double faults to Sabalenka’s six.

The Wuhan defeat extends a challenging period for Sabalenka, who has not won a title since completing the Sunshine Double with victories at Indian Wells and the Miami Open earlier in 2026. Her run to the US Open final offered an opportunity to secure another Grand Slam title, but she lost to Elena Rybakina. The result meant Sabalenka would finish the season without a major championship for the first time since 2022. She also exited the China Open in the third round and subsequently lost the world number one ranking to Rybakina.

The Wuhan Open had been one of Sabalenka’s most productive stops on the WTA Tour. She won the title in 2018 and 2019 before returning to the top of the podium in 2024. The tournament was not held from 2020 through 2023 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, making her latest campaign a disappointing end to a venue where she has repeatedly excelled.

For Li, ranked world number 31, the result marked a major milestone and reinforced the unpredictable nature of the WTA 1000 event. Her victory also came amid a difficult day for the seeded players, with second seed Jessica Pegula losing to Jelena Ostapenko in another three-set comeback.

A warning sign for Sabalenka ahead of the season finale. Sabalenka’s Wuhan Open exit is about more than one unexpected defeat. Her ability to fight back from a difficult position demonstrated her competitive resilience, but the 44 unforced errors highlighted a problem that Li was able to exploit. As the season approaches its conclusion, reducing those lapses will be crucial if Sabalenka hopes to regain momentum.

For Li, the victory is an opportunity to build confidence against the tour’s leading players. By surviving a three-set battle against a former world number one and converting a series of late match points, she showed the composure required to compete at the highest level. The immediate result belongs to Li. The bigger question for the remainder of the season is whether Sabalenka can rediscover the consistency that powered her earlier success.
