In the fifth edition of the Asian Youth Para Games held in Dubai, UAE, India’s campaign was a successful one. India finished at No. 7 on the medals table with 56 medals in the tally that included 19 gold, 15 silver, and 16 bronze.

Paralympic bronze medallist Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan brought honour to her country after securing two medals in the badminton sport. She won gold in the women’s singles and a bronze in the doubles event.
Born in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, Nithya is supported by her father, grandmother, and her brother, who lost her mother at the age of one. Her introduction to sports was done by her father, who was a sports enthusiast, as well as her brother, who used to play cricket at the district level. Her love for sports started with cricket, but then she found an interest in badminton after watching the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Soon her interest turned into passion. She started playing badminton on the streets along with her friends. From practicing twice a week, she then started training herself on a daily basis. After the Covid-19 outbreak, she got familiar with Para-Badminton and moved to Lucknow to train under Gaurav Khanna, Team India head coach.
Not long after, she started competing in international events from the year 2021. And this year, she got the chance to represent her country at the Asian Youth Para Games and brought success with two medal wins. Nithya, however, has set her aim to represent India at the World Championship 2026, followed by the 2028 LA Olympics.
