With an eye firmly on the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, India have infused fresh energy into their T20I setup, rewarding domestic and franchise performances with national recognition. Rising talents Kashvee Gautam and Anushka Sharma headline the inclusions as the Women’s selection committee unveiled a 15-member squad for the five-match T20I series against South Africa in April.

The series, set to be played across Durban, Johannesburg, and Benoni, will serve as a crucial preparatory assignment ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England later this year. With conditions in South Africa offering a competitive challenge, the tour is expected to play a key role in shaping India’s final combinations.
India will continue under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, with Smriti Mandhana serving as her deputy. The squad retains a strong core of experienced performers including Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, ensuring continuity alongside the new inclusions.
The call-up for Kashvee Gautam marks a significant step in her rapidly progressing career. The 22-year-old seamer has consistently impressed in domestic cricket and the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where she represented Gujarat Giants and picked up 19 wickets in 18 matches. Having already made her ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2025 and earning a Test cap against Australia earlier this year, her inclusion in the T20I squad completes a swift rise through the ranks.
Similarly, Anushka Sharma’s selection reflects the growing importance of all-rounders in the modern T20 setup. The 22-year-old showcased her batting prowess in the 2026 WPL season, scoring 177 runs in seven matches. Her performances for India A, particularly in their victorious Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars campaign, further strengthened her case for a maiden international call-up.
Wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry also returns to the setup, adding depth to the squad. Having already represented India in both T20Is and ODIs, Chetry brings experience and versatility despite missing out on a WPL contract this season.
While the squad sees exciting additions, a few notable names miss out. Players like Sneh Rana and Amanjot Kaur, who were part of recent assignments, have been left out as the selectors experiment with combinations and bench strength. The bowling unit will once again rely on the pace duo of Renuka Singh Thakur and Arundhati Reddy, while young talents like Shreyanka Patil and Kranti Gaud add variety to the attack.
The five-match T20I series begins on April 17 in Durban, followed by another fixture at the same venue on April 19. The action then moves to Johannesburg for matches on April 22 and 25, before concluding in Benoni on April 27.
With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, this series will be more than just a bilateral contest, it will be an opportunity for players to stake their claim, adapt to pressure situations, and fine-tune their roles within the team.
As India builds towards a crucial tournament, the introduction of new faces like Kashvee Gautam and Anushka Sharma signals a forward-looking approach.
