The World Aquatics (WA) have faced rejection from the Norwegian Swimming Federation. They have declined to host the event if athletes from Russia and Belarus will compete. The announcement was released by the Reuters after President Cato Bratbakk released statements on the matter on Tuesday, April 21.

“Our position is clear. We will not host any championships as long as Russian and Belarusian senior and junior competitors have full access, entry rights, and are permitted to use their flags and national anthems,” Bratbakk said.
Norway is aiming for a broader regional boycott for hosting duties. Bratbakk added that a meeting will be conducted to make their stand against WA’s decision to allow Russia and Belarus to compete in the event.
“We are scheduled to meet with Nordic colleagues next week, where we hope our position will create momentum against the decision made by World Aquatics,” he mentioned.
On Friday, April 17, Poland made a similar move standing by the decision by WA. However, the governing body is yet to respond to the comments being made on their decisions.
The decision brings note of the ongoing conflict in the international swimming community after WA lifted neutrality restrictions last week.
Earlier competitors from both Russia and Belarus were banned from participating in international sporting events after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, they were given the permit to compete in WA events from April 14 with their respective uniforms, flags and anthems. The WA has also confirmed that both the nations will resume with their membership rights.
