In a significant step that blends elite performance with leadership, Indian badminton star P. V. The two time Olympic medallist now takes on the responsibility of shaping the future of the sport while continuing to compete at the highest level, a rare dual role in international badminton.

Sindhu’s entry into the BWF Council follows her election as Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission in December, a position that automatically grants her a seat with full voting rights in the sport’s top decision making body. After completing the required vetting procedures, she officially assumed office at the end of 2025 and made her first appearance before the global badminton community during the Annual General Meeting held on April 25.

“It is a true honour and privilege to take on this responsibility within the Badminton World Federation and to represent the voices of athletes from around the world. Badminton has given me so much, and I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the sport in this capacity,” she said in a release.

The BWF Council is the highest governing authority in world badminton, responsible for policy making, strategic direction, and the overall development of the sport. It plays a crucial role in decisions related to tournament structures, athlete welfare, global expansion, and commercial growth. Sindhu’s presence in this body is particularly notable given that active players rarely hold such influential positions while still competing on the international circuit.

Throughout her career, Sindhu has been one of badminton’s most consistent and globally recognized athletes. She won silver at the Rio 2016 Olympics and followed it up with a bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, becoming the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals in an individual sport. In addition, she achieved a historic milestone by winning gold at the 2019 BWF World Championships, cementing her legacy among the greats of the game.

Her leadership role now extends beyond the court. As Chair of the Athletes’ Commission, Sindhu is expected to act as a bridge between players and administrators, ensuring that athlete perspectives are not only heard but actively influence decisions. Issues such as scheduling, workload management, prize money distribution, and mental health support have become increasingly important in modern sport, and her firsthand experience as a top tier athlete positions her well to advocate for meaningful change.

Sindhu’s appointment also reflects a broader shift within international sports governance, where athlete representation is gaining prominence. Organizations across disciplines are increasingly recognizing the need to include active competitors in decision making processes, bringing authenticity and relevance to policy discussions. Her inclusion in the BWF Council aligns with this global trend, reinforcing the importance of athlete led insights in shaping the sport’s future.

Welcoming her to the Council, BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul highlighted Sindhu’s influence both on and off the court.

“Over many years, P. V. Sindhu has demonstrated exceptional skill, grace and spirit on the court, and it is wonderful to now have such an outstanding role model representing the voice of our athletes.”

As Sindhu balances her competitive ambitions with administrative responsibilities, her journey represents a new chapter for badminton. It signals a future where athletes are not just participants but key stakeholders in the evolution of the sport. Her tenure will be closely watched, not only for the decisions she helps shape but also for the precedent it sets for future generations of players aiming to lead from within.
