The victory marked another significant milestone for the Indian pair, who were appearing in their second consecutive WTT Contender final. Having steadily built chemistry over recent months, Manush and Diya displayed remarkable consistency throughout the tournament and emerged as one of the standout combinations in Lagos.

The Indian duo dropped just one game across four matches en route to the title, underlining their dominance against an international field that featured several experienced pairings from Europe, Asia, and Africa. Their sharp coordination, aggressive receiving game, and quick transitions near the table proved decisive throughout the competition.

In the final, Manush and Diya started strongly against the French combination, taking control early with precise placement and aggressive attacking play. Although the second game turned into a tightly fought battle, the Indian pair held their nerve during crucial rallies to edge it 14-12 before comfortably closing out the third game to seal the championship.

The title win further highlights India’s growing strength in doubles events on the global table tennis circuit. Over the last few years, Indian players have consistently improved their performances in mixed and doubles categories, aided by greater exposure to international competitions and the emergence of young talents from the national setup.

Manush Shah, in particular, enjoyed an outstanding tournament in Lagos across multiple events. Apart from winning the mixed doubles crown, the Gujarat paddler also reached the men’s doubles final alongside Manav Thakkar. The Indian pair produced a dominant semifinal display against Nigerian brothers Taiwo and Matthew, cruising to an 11-4, 11-6, 11-9 victory.

The result secured Manush and Manav their first major final appearance of the year on the WTT circuit. They are now set to face Romania’s Lulian Chrita and Andrei Istrate in Sunday’s title clash.

The partnership between Manush and Manav has steadily developed into one of India’s strongest men’s doubles combinations. Both players bring contrasting styles to the table, with Manush relying on quick counterattacks and aggressive forehand play while Manav adds control and tactical variation.

Manush also impressed in the singles competition, emerging as the lone Indian to reach the semifinals in the men’s draw. His campaign included victories over higher-ranked opponents before eventually ending against South Korea’s Oh Junsong, one of the tournament favourites.

Despite the semifinal defeat, Manush’s overall performance in Lagos once again reinforced his growing stature in Indian table tennis. The 25-year-old has been among India’s most consistent performers on the international circuit over the past two seasons and continues to climb the world rankings through strong results at WTT events.

Diya Chitale also continued her rise as one of India’s brightest young prospects. The teenager has enjoyed a breakthrough period in recent months, earning recognition for her fearless approach and composure against experienced international opponents. Her title-winning run in Lagos is expected to further boost her confidence ahead of upcoming international assignments.

India’s women’s doubles campaign, however, ended in the semifinals. The experienced pairing of Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee fell short of a final berth despite a spirited effort, while the combination of Yashaswini Ghorpade and Diya Chitale also exited in the last four stage.

The performances in Lagos continue India’s encouraging momentum on the WTT circuit in 2026. Indian paddlers have increasingly become regular contenders at Contender and Star Contender events, reflecting the growing depth and competitiveness within the national program.

The Table Tennis Federation of India has placed significant emphasis on preparing younger players through international exposure and structured development programs, especially after India’s historic successes at the Commonwealth Games and Asian competitions in recent years.

With players like Manush Shah, Diya Chitale, Manav Thakkar, and several emerging juniors making consistent progress internationally, Indian table tennis appears to be entering another promising phase ahead of major global events, including the Asian Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

For now, though, the spotlight firmly belongs to Manush and Diya, whose composed and dominant run in Lagos delivered yet another memorable international title for Indian table tennis.
