Swiatek lost to America’s Emma Navarro 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, while Andreeva lost in straight sets to her fellow countrywoman, Ekaterina Alexandrova in the important Wimbledon warm-up tournament. This was Swiatek’s first game since she was eliminated from Roland Garros, and she struggled from the start. While she found her way back, a series of double faults allowed Navarro to claim the victory.

During her on-court interview, Navarro said, “Yeah, it’s tough. It’s warm out. The ball is kind of flying. There’s not a ton of rhythm. I think both of us felt that throughout the match, so it came down to a lot of serving, and I relied on my serve there at the end. And it ended up getting me through.”

Earlier that day, Andreeva matched her compatriot in the opening set, but eventually lost seven straight games. She was down 4-0 and 40-15 but fought her way back into the game by winning three straight sets. However the world No. 19, Alexandrova won the match in one hour and 28 minutes.

Alexandrova will face Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals.

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina pulled out of the tournament on Wednesday, saying Tuesday’s win over Liudmila Samsonova was hard on her body. She was set to face Wang Xinyu in the quarter-finals. The reason for her withdrawal was stated as a right hip injury.

“ Hi guys, it’s Elina here. Unfortunately I will be pulling out of my quarterfinal match here in Bad Homburg,” Svitolina said in a video posted on the tournament’s X account.

“Last night was a hard-fought victory, but it took a little bit more than expected out of my body, so therefore I need a few more days to recover. I wish all the best to all the players who are still competing, and a lot of success to the tournament, and will hopefully see you all next year.”
