The National Women’s Soccer League has made its boldest scheduling decision yet, bringing forward the start of the 2027 season to ensure the league remains at the centre of global attention during one of the biggest moments in women’s football. With the FIFA Women’s World Cup set to take place in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, the NWSL has opted for an earlier kick off, a month-long pause during the tournament and a return to complete its full domestic campaign.
Announced on August 5, the revised calendar will see the 2027 regular season begin on February 11 in Los Angeles, making it the earliest start in league history. The season opener will take place during Super Bowl weekend, with the NFL’s showpiece game scheduled just across town in Inglewood, a move that reflects the league’s growing confidence in sharing the spotlight with one of American sport’s biggest spectacles.
The 2027 Challenge Cup, contested between the reigning NWSL champions and the previous season’s Shield winners, will be held on February 6 before the regular season gets underway. Players will report for preseason training camps in early January, leaving them with the shortest offseason in league history following the 2026 NWSL Championship on November 21.
The schedule overhaul is driven primarily by the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, where many of the league’s biggest stars are expected to represent their national teams. Rather than compressing fixtures or forcing clubs to play without their international players, the NWSL will pause the competition for seven weeks while maintaining its full 30 match regular season in which every club plays each opponent both home and away.
“By maintaining our spring to fall calendar, which we decided earlier this year, we’ve created the best possible environment for our players, clubs, partners and fans to maximize the extraordinary opportunity presented by the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman said on an Aug. 5 call. “We know that major tournaments inspire millions of people to follow the sport and our schedule allows us to be part of the lead-in and lead-out of that big moment.”
The league had previously explored a shift to a European-style summer-to-spring calendar but abandoned those plans earlier this year, confirming that it would continue with its traditional spring-to-fall format through at least 2030. The latest announcement reinforces that commitment while adapting the domestic schedule to fit around the international football calendar.
For the NWSL, the decision is as much a commercial strategy as it is a sporting one. Women’s football continues to experience unprecedented global growth, with the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup setting new attendance and broadcast records. FIFA expects Brazil 2027 to build further on that momentum as South America prepares to host the tournament for the first time. The competition will run from June 24 to July 25 across eight Brazilian host cities, bringing together 32 of the world’s best national teams.
Rather than viewing the World Cup as an interruption, the NWSL intends to use the tournament as a launchpad for renewed fan engagement once domestic football resumes. By allowing players to compete on the global stage before returning to club football, the league hopes to attract new audiences and sustain interest throughout the remainder of the season.
The revised calendar also reflects the league’s broader ambitions. The NWSL has expanded rapidly in recent years, growing from 12 to 16 clubs while significantly increasing the number of league fixtures. Commissioner Berman has repeatedly described the years leading into the 2027 World Cup, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the proposed 2031 Women’s World Cup in the United States as a defining period for the league’s long-term growth.
The 2027 regular season will conclude on October 31, with the playoffs beginning on November 5. The NWSL Championship is scheduled for November 20, although the host venue has yet to be announced. The league has confirmed that the complete fixture list will be released at a later date.
With women’s football entering what many consider its most transformative decade, the NWSL’s decision underlines a changing philosophy. Instead of competing with the Women’s World Cup for attention, the league is choosing to embrace it, positioning itself to benefit from the surge in global interest that the tournament is expected to generate.
