Indian shuttlers have started the 2026 season with the first Super1000 tournament, the Malaysia Open, scheduled in Kuala Lumpur from January 6 to 11.

Over 12 Indian shutters have entered the first round participating across five different categories. The event includes top names like Lakshya Sen, PV Sindhu in the singles event, and the pairs of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand and Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in women’s and men’s doubles respectively.
Leading the singles category, India’s No. 1 Lakshya and female star PV Sindhu will head into the tournament in their respective matches. In the first match, Sindhu will face Chinese Taipei’s Shuo Yun Sung, while Lakshya will play against Jason Teh of Singapore. Sindhu finished last season with a 11-15 record (11 wins and 15 losses). Currently Nom 18 in world rankings, she is a two-time Olympic medalist with five World Championship titles.
Meanwhile, the women’s doubles pair of Treesa and Gayatri are aiming for a strong comeback in Malaysia. In the first round they will face the Indonesian duo of Febriana Kusuma and Meilysa Puspitasari. At the Australia Open in November 2025, the Indian pair suffered a loss against the Indonesian duo. Both Tressa and Gayatri suffered setbacks due to injury last year.
Treesa and Gayatri finished the 2025 season as no. 11, their career-best rank as per the list released by the BWF World Rankings. The women’s doubles pair were close to defeating World No. 1 duo of Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China in the 2025 BWF World Tour Finals.
In men’s doubles, Satwik-Chirag will first face the Chinese Taipei pair of Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-hsuan. The world No. 3 pair are the only seeded Indians in the event and are entering the event without any title won in the 2025 season.
