Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi delivered a focused and effective performance on May 17, defeating defending champion Chen Yufei to win the women’s singles title at the Thailand Open 2026 in Bangkok.

Competing at Nimibutr Stadium, the three-time world champion maintained control for most of the final, beating Chen 21-14, 21-18 in just 39 minutes. Yamaguchi dominated the first game with her trademark speed and precision. Although Chen attempted to increase the pace in the second game, the Japanese star did not let the defending champion find her rhythm.
This victory marked a significant point in Yamaguchi’s season after she missed previous finals earlier in the year. “This year I did not make another final so this result is very important for me,” she said after her victory. “As the game progressed, I felt that Chen Yufei was attacking more so rather than being nervous, I tried to stay calm and play my own game… happy to play a good, attacking game.”
Yamaguchi’s movement and court coverage proved to be crucial. She consistently absorbed Chen’s pressure and effectively transitioned from defense to attack with sharp angles and smart placements. Even when Chen tried to create longer rallies, Yamaguchi remained composed and rarely appeared troubled.
For Chen, the match was a disappointing conclusion to an otherwise strong campaign. The Chinese world No. 3 had confidently progressed through the draw and aimed to be the first Chinese women’s singles player in 19 years to defend the Thailand Open title, a feat last achieved by Zhu Lin in 2007. However, in the final, she found herself overshadowed by Yamaguchi’s consistent intensity.
The title adds another achievement to the already impressive résumé of the 28-year-old from Fukui. Yamaguchi has won world championship gold in 2021, 2022, and 2025. Her journey in Bangkok also included a challenging comeback win over PV Sindhu in the quarterfinals, where she recovered from a game down to win 19-21, 21-18, 21-15.
The women’s doubles final also provided plenty of excitement. China’s Bao Lijing and Cao Zihan, playing their first international tournament as a pair, fought back to defeat Japan’s Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi 19-21, 21-16, 21-19 in a thrilling 72-minute final.
With the Thailand Open crown now secured, Yamaguchi hopes this victory marks a turning point in her 2026 season. Based on her performance in Bangkok, she appears ready to pursue many more titles in the coming months.
