PV Sindhu has advanced to the final of the 2026 Japan Open Super 750 tournament. This is Sindhu’s first-ever final clash in the Japan Open. During the semifinal match, Chen Yufei retired during the second set of the match. Sindhu had already won the first set 21-19 and was leading 15-10 when Yufei had to withdraw due to a hamstring injury.
In the previous editions of the Japan Open, Sindhu did not experience success. In last year’s tournament, she suffered a round-of-32 exit, and in the 2023 edition, she lost in the round of 16.
This is the deepest run she’s had in the 2026 season. Let’s take a look at some of her other performances leading up to this year’s Japan Open.
- In the Malaysia Open Super 1000, Sindhu lost to China’s Wang Zhiyi 21-17, 21-14.
- During the Singapore Open Super 750, she suffered a quarter-final exit, losing to South Korea’s An Se-Young 21-16, 21-15.
- In the Indonesia Open, she again lost to South Korea’s An Se-Young, this time in the Round of 16, 21-17, 21-15.
- In the Indonesia Masters, Sindhu fell in the quarter-finals to Chen Yufei 21-13, 21-17.
- In the Australian Open, too, the two-time Olympic medalist lost in the semi-finals. She lost to A. Yamaguchi, 22-21, 20-12
An Se-Young and Chen Yufei have been her biggest obstacles so far, but having gone past Yufei in the semifinals this time, maybe this time it could be Sindhu’s opportunity.
With all these near misses in the 2026 season so far, Sindhu will look to go all the way this time. She will face Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi on Sunday, July 19th, 2026.
