Chennai’s Savitha Shri Bhaskar, won the Asian Chess Championship locking her place for the FIDE Women’s World Cup.

The 19-year-old International Master, Savitha Shri Bhaskar won the Asian Chess Championship in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Finishing the championship with 7.5 points, she was tied with Uzbekistan’s Afruza Khamdamova. Savitha was awarded the title on tiebreaks.
She was the sixth seed in the tournament and produced a dominant performance in a field of more than 100 players.
This is Savitha’s biggest achievement so far, she earned the Woman Grandmaster Title in 2023, and the International Master title in 2025. In 2022, she won the bronze medal at the Women’s World Rapid Championship, which put her in the spotlight.
Savitha also participated in the Asian Games, where she was a part of the silver-winning team.
This triumph means India has its 13th Women’s Asian Championship Title and continues its dominance, having won three of the last four editions.
Bhaskar was inspired by her older brother to start playing chess and rose through the ranks with the support of her family.
This win means she has qualified for the 2027 FIDE Women’s World Cup, and has a chance to establish her name among the leading players of this era. It’s going to be an exciting time for her as she will look to get only better from here.
