Road to Recovery for West Indies Captain Hayley Matthews Begins
West Indies cricket captain Hayley Matthews has officially shared an update regarding her injury on social media. Her post underscored her determination to return stronger while also embracing her new responsibilities as a Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) tournament ambassador. Matthews was entirely ruled out of WCPL 2025 earlier this month due to a shoulder injury. The news spread disappointment amongst the team and fans as her role has been significant since its initiation.

The absence of Hayley Matthews from WCPL 2025 is a significant hit to the competition. Matthews’ all-round performances have been impactful in boosting the popularity of the tournament. Hayley played a decisive role in guiding Barbados Royals to simultaneous WCPL titles in 2023 and 2024. Her dominance in the WCPL can be noted from the fact that she is the leading run-scorer as well as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Matthews has scored 424 runs at a strike rate of 113.06 and 23 wickets in 13 matches at an economy rate of 5.79. Her ability to contribute as both a dominant batter and a frontline bowler makes her a valuable player for her team. It will be a considerable challenge for Barbados Royals to lose Hayley Matthews; however, Chinelle Henry has been appointed as captain in her absence.
Matthews sustained her shoulder injury during the West Indies women’s tour of England, forcing her to undergo surgery. As a result, she also skipped the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). She was picked by the Melbourne Renegades as a pre-draft pick. However, she returned to cricket in the home series against South Africa and also participated in The Hundred Women’s competition in England.
Hayley might not be playing in the WCPL, but she will be a key part of the tournament as an ambassador. Her role will be to promote health, wellness, and athlete care. As an ambassador, she will stay connected with the cricket community and fans. As a high-performance athlete managing diabetes, this role will bring personal dynamics to this role. Her journey of balancing elite sport and a chronic condition will serve as a powerful inspiration for fans.
With her impact and reach, Hayley Matthews is prepared to bring a meaningful impact off the field and recover to make a comeback in cricket.
