Dane van Niekerk has dealt a fresh setback, with the all-rounder ruled out of South Africa’s ongoing tour of New Zealand due to a calf injury. The development halts what was meant to be a significant chapter in her comeback journey after reversing her international retirement.

Van Niekerk, a former captain and one of South Africa’s most experienced players, had already missed the opening match of the tour. Medical assessments have now confirmed she will take no further part in the series, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs.

In her absence, Anneke Bosch has been drafted into the squad. Bosch, who last featured in a T20I in November 2024, now has an opportunity to re-establish herself on the international stage.

The injury comes at a crucial time for van Niekerk, who has been working her way back into contention for South Africa’s squad ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Having missed the last two global tournaments, this tour was seen as a key chance to strengthen her case for selection.

Her journey back to the national side has been anything but straightforward. After failing to meet fitness benchmarks in 2022, van Niekerk was dropped from the national setup, which ultimately led to her retirement in early 2023. However, she remained active in domestic cricket, representing Western Province and gradually rebuilding form and fitness. Her persistence paid off when she earned a recall in late 2025 for a home series against Ireland.

South Africa are also without another senior figure, as Marizanne Kapp continues to recover from illness and is not part of the touring squad.

With the squad managing key absences, South Africa will need to rely on their bench strength as the tour progresses. For van Niekerk, the focus now shifts back to recovery, with hopes of regaining fitness in time to remain in contention for future international assignments.
