England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt will miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand after being ruled out with a minor calf injury, as the team management prioritises her fitness ahead of a crucial home season. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Sciver-Brunt sustained a minor tear in her left calf, with the decision taken as a precautionary measure to avoid any long-term setback.

The all-rounder picked up the injury while representing The Blaze in a Metro Bank Cup fixture against Warwickshire Women, where she impressed with 47 off 32 balls and 2 for 45 from seven overs. Following the injury, Sciver-Brunt did not take part in any physical activities during a leadership programme conducted for the England squad in collaboration with the British Army. The programme, aimed at strengthening leadership and team cohesion ahead of the World Cup, saw her limited to non-physical involvement.

Her availability for the upcoming T20I assignments will now depend on her recovery. The ECB has indicated that her participation in the T20I series against New Zealand and India will be assessed closer to the fixtures, in line with the cautious approach being adopted.

England are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series against New Zealand from May 10 to May 25, before taking on India in another three-match T20I series from May 28 to June 2. These matches form a key part of England’s preparation for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, which they will host beginning in June.

Sciver-Brunt’s absence for the ODIs is a significant setback given her influence with both bat and ball, as well as her leadership role. One of the world’s leading all-rounders, she has been central to England’s plans across formats and is expected to be pivotal in their World Cup campaign if fully fit.

In her absence, England have made adjustments to the squad. Vice-captain Charlie Dean returns to the ODI setup as she continues her recovery from a back stress fracture and will lead the side, while top-order batter Maia Bouchier has been added to provide additional cover.

England have not played competitive cricket since the ODI World Cup last year, although they did travel to South Africa earlier this year for a preparatory camp. The upcoming home fixtures are expected to play a crucial role in helping the side regain match sharpness and finalise combinations ahead of the global tournament.

There have been a few injury concerns within the squad. Spinner Sarah Glenn continues to recover from a finger injury and remains unavailable, but there has been a boost with the return of all-rounders Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson after extended layoffs.

With a packed schedule leading into a home World Cup, England’s approach reflects a clear priority, ensuring their key players are fully fit for the biggest stage. While Sciver-Brunt’s absence will be felt in the short term, the focus remains firmly on having their captain ready for the global tournament.
