Hannah Hampton, the England international, has signed a new two-year deal with Chelsea.
Hampton’s contract was set to expire this summer; however, Chelsea needed to keep her in an effort to bounce back from their disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
The goalkeeper joined in 2023 from Aston Villa and, since then, has become one of the best goalkeepers and cemented her place as first choice for the Lionesses.
She has won five trophies during her time at Chelsea and was an excellent performer during the 2025 Euros. The 25-year-old also won the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or awards last year.
“I’m really happy,” Hampton said. “Chelsea have always been my dream club to play for in England, so to be able to extend for another two years is a proud moment.”
“When I moved to London from the Midlands, it was my first time moving away from home, and everyone at Chelsea made it feel like a home away from home, and somewhere I have been able to grow, not only as a player, but as a person.
“I don’t want that journey to stop, and I want to continue to grow more and learn more as a person. I know there is so much more I can achieve and so much more we, as a team, can achieve.
“I am going to do everything I can to help Chelsea get back to being as successful as we have been in the past.”
Hampton received a call-up for the senior team for the first time in 2020, as a training player in the travelling party for the 2020 SheBelieves Cup. On 20th February 2022, she made her senior England debut, starting England’s 0–0 draw with Spain in the 2022 Arnold Clark Cup.
In October 2022, the Guardian reported that she had been dropped from the England squad due to concerns over her attitude. It was “unlikely” that Hampton would return to the team under Weigman; when asked in November ’22 about the goalkeeper’s absence, Weigman said ‘‘she has to do something personal that I would not like to comment on.’’
Return to the Squad:
On 31st May 2023, Hampton was named in the squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in July 2023.
On 9 April 2024, Hampton began featuring in the starting lineup for Euro 2025 qualifying matches, and kept a clean sheet in a 2–0 victory over the Republic of Ireland.
Following an injury to Mary Earps, she came on as a substitute in the 2-1 defeat to France on 31 May.
Hampton helped Chelsea to an unbeaten domestic treble in 2024-25 and has also claimed back-to-back Golden Glove awards in the WSL.
In the 2024-25 season, she kept 13 clean sheets in 22 league appearances for the club as they became the first WSL team to finish a 22-game season unbeaten.
Chelsea have gone through a tough year with several big-name players leaving this summer. So Hampton’s renewal was crucial for their plans, and there was also growing anxiety from the fanbase about whether an agreement was made.
She has had a difficult few years, with the release of Mary Earps’ autobiography throwing her into the spotlight; however, her quality on the pitch is clear.
For someone who’s widely considered one of the best players in the WSL, Hampton will look to take her team to new heights and produce her best game on the field.
