Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH, commonly known as Bayer 04 Leverkusen, is a German women’s football club based in Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia.
The club’s roots go back to SSG 09 Bergisch Gladbach, which in the 1970s and 1980s was the dominant club in German women’s football. During that period, they won the German championship 9 times, which is still the record today. They also won the DFB-POKAL three times; however, after the inception of the Bundesliga in 1990, their performance declined, which eventually led to relegation.
In 1996, the women’s team moved from SSG 09 Bergisch Gladbach to TuS Köln rrh. At Köln, the team played mostly second-tier football with a few seasons in the third tier in between. The team was not able to find any sponsors which would help the team’s dream of Bundesliga football again.
During the same time, Bayer Leverkusen had announced their interest in establishing a women’s football section of their own; hence, on June 25, 2008, the women’s football department of TuS Köln rrh. disbanded to join Bayer Leverkusen.
In their first season under Bayer Leverkusen’s identity, the team finished 7th in the south group of the 2. Bundesliga. The following season, Leverkusen became champions of the 2. Bundesliga and gained promotion to the Frauen-Bundesliga.
In their debut season in the Bundesliga, they finished 8th on the table. The next season they finished 11th in the table; however, they weren’t relegated as Hamburger SV announced the disestablishment of its women’s section.
The club plays their home games at Ulrich-Haberland-Stadium.

The club made their first debut in the Frauen-Bundesliga in the 2010-11 season and finished 8th in the table.

The club hasn’t won any major titles under the name Bayer Leverkusen; however, under their old identity, SSG 09 Bergisch Gladbach, they’ve won several trophies.
