The move would represent another important step in United’s attempt to strengthen their defensive options ahead of a season in which expectations will be high under Olid.
At 29, Bernal brings a level of experience that fits the profile of a squad undergoing considerable change. She joined Washington Spirit from Mexican club CF Monterrey in February 2025 and has become an important part of the NWSL side. The Spirit list her as a midfielder and Mexico national team captain, while her ability to operate centrally in defence gives her considerable tactical flexibility. Bernal has made 41 appearances for Washington and was part of the side that won the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2025. Her recent absence from the Spirit’s 1-0 victory over Bay FC on Sunday, officially described by the club as an “excused absence”, further fuelled speculation surrounding her impending move to England.
The Mexican international arrives with an impressive record at international level. She has earned 65 caps for Mexico and scored seven goals, including the decisive strike in the 2023 Pan American Games final against Chile. That goal secured Mexico’s first women’s football gold medal at the competition. Bernal’s potential arrival is also significant on a broader level. If completed, she would become the first Mexican player to feature in the Women’s Super League, adding another international dimension to a competition that continues to attract leading players from around the world.
For United, however, the priority will be what Bernal can bring on the pitch. The club have already been active in the transfer market. Spanish defender Andrea Medina has arrived from Atletico Madrid, German goalkeeper Janina Leitzig has joined from Leicester City and Swedish winger Monica Jusu Bah has signed from BK Hacken. Jusu Bah, who has 11 Sweden caps, joined on a four-year contract in a deal reported to be worth just under £400,000. Bernal would therefore become the latest piece in a squad being reshaped after Marc Skinner’s departure following five years in charge.
Olid was appointed in August on a contract through June 2028 after leading Heart of Midlothian to their first Scottish Women’s Premier League title. Her appointment represents a clear shift for United, with the club placing faith in a coach whose recent work was built around development and maximising the potential of her players. Her first competitive test could hardly be more intriguing. United begin their WSL campaign away to heavily backed London City Lionesses on Friday, a side that has recruited some of the biggest names in women’s football, including Alexia Putellas, Mary Earps, Mapi León and Kadidiatou Diani.
United are building for stability, not simply adding names. The most interesting aspect of Bernal’s potential arrival is not her nationality or the novelty of becoming the first Mexican player in the WSL. It is the type of player United are pursuing. After losing experienced defensive options, United need reliability as much as star quality. Bernal offers both positional flexibility and international experience, allowing Olid to adjust her defensive structure without necessarily making another substitution.
United finished fourth last season but missed out on Champions League qualification, while Skinner’s departure signalled the beginning of a reset. Olid now has the responsibility of turning a talented squad into a more consistent challenger. The summer recruitment suggests United understand that the answer will not come from one spectacular signing. Medina adds youth and attacking intent from defence, Leitzig strengthens the goalkeeping department and Jusu Bah offers pace and directness. Bernal, if the deal is completed, would add something different: composure, experience and tactical versatility.
United’s opening fixture against London City will provide an early indication. With Putellas and company waiting on the other side, Olid’s new-look side will have little time to ease into the season. For Bernal, meanwhile, a move to England would mark the next chapter of a career that has already taken her from Monterrey to Washington and onto the international stage.
