England World Cup-Winning Captain Zoe Stratford Welcomes First Child

Zoe Stratford‘s latest milestone has nothing to do with a rugby pitch, a trophy or a captain’s armband. The England World Cup-winning captain has welcomed her first child, with the 29-year-old giving birth to a baby girl on Wednesday. Stratford, formerly known as Zoe Aldcroft, announced the arrival with her husband Luke, with Sale Sharks responding to the post with the message: “The most amazing news!”

The birth marks another major chapter in a remarkable year for Stratford, who captained England to World Cup glory against Canada in September 2025 before making a move to Sale Sharks ahead of the 2026/27 Premiership Women’s Rugby season. Sale Sharks confirmed earlier this year that Stratford had signed for the club after an extraordinary spell with Gloucester-Hartpury. The England forward had been central to Gloucester-Hartpury’s rise to dominance in the domestic women’s game, co-captaining the side to three consecutive Premiership Women’s Rugby titles.

From World Cup glory to motherhood. Stratford’s transition into motherhood comes after one of the biggest periods of her rugby career. The Scarborough-born forward made her England debut in 2016 and has earned 69 Test caps. In September 2025, she led the Red Roses to World Cup glory against Canada in front of a sold-out Allianz Stadium, adding the biggest trophy of her international career to an already decorated résumé. Her rise had begun several years earlier.

In 2021, Stratford was named World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year, recognition that followed a season in which she played every minute of England’s victorious Women’s Six Nations campaign. World Rugby also named her in its Women’s 15s Dream Team that year. Her performances in that campaign underlined the qualities that would later make her an England leader. World Rugby recorded 42 successful tackles during the 2021 Six Nations, while she also carried 33 times in England’s matches against Scotland, Italy and France.

A new chapter with Sale Sharks. Stratford’s move to Sale Sharks had already signalled a significant change in her rugby career. The club announced in May that she would join for the 2026/27 season, describing her as England’s World Cup-winning captain. Her arrival was part of a wider strengthening of the Sale women’s squad, with the club also bringing in fellow Red Roses Tatyana Heard. However, motherhood temporarily changed those plans.

Sale Sharks confirmed that Stratford and husband Luke, who is involved with the club’s women’s coaching setup, announced in March that they were expecting their first child. The pregnancy ruled Stratford out of England’s 2026 Women’s Six Nations campaign. Her latest announcement therefore represents the beginning of a different kind of journey, one that will eventually raise questions about how and when she returns to professional rugby.

Part of a wider conversation in women’s rugby. Stratford is not the only high-profile England player to have navigated pregnancy alongside a professional rugby career. The issue has increasingly become part of the conversation around player welfare and the future of women’s sport. Bristol’s Lark Atkin-Davies and Abbie Ward have also spoken publicly about pregnancy and motherhood during their rugby careers, while England teammates Marlie Packer and Rosie Galligan announced that they were expecting a baby together earlier this year.

England captain Meg Jones has also called for greater access to fertility support and egg-freezing options for professional rugby players, highlighting the wider challenges athletes can face when balancing elite sporting careers with family planning. For Stratford, however, the immediate focus is on her family.

A different kind of milestone. Zoe Stratford has spent much of her career being measured by tackles, caps, victories and trophies. Her latest milestone cannot be measured on a scoreboard. The arrival of her first child comes after a year in which she reached the summit of international rugby as England’s World Cup-winning captain. It also comes as she prepares for what could eventually be another demanding phase of her sporting career with Sale Sharks. The story is bigger than one player.

Stratford’s journey reflects the changing landscape of women’s professional rugby, where athletes are increasingly navigating elite competition alongside decisions about family, fertility and motherhood. What comes next for Stratford on the rugby field remains to be seen. For now, the former World Player of the Year has a new role to embrace. From leading England to World Cup glory to welcoming her first child, Zoe Stratford’s 2026 has already delivered another unforgettable chapter.
