On Saturday, February 14, India’s shot-put athlete Krishna Jayasankar Menon improved her own national record in the women’s indoor event at the 2026 Don Kirby Elite Invitational held in Albuquerque. The Indian bagged the title with a score of 16.83m, followed by Ines Lopez with an effort of 15.54m and Carlie Weiser with 15.39m in the second and third place, respectively.

This was the third time that Krishna bettered her own national record in the women’s shot put event. This time she improved by 0.20m since her last month’s record of 16.63 scored in the New Mexico Open 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA).
At the Elite International, the 23-year-old started her campaign with a serious first attempt, scoring 16.02m. It was in the second attempt that she scored her personal best of 16.83m. In the following two throws, she registered scores of 16.60m and 16.72m but went on to foul her fifth and sixth attempts.
The daughter of former Indian basketball players Prasanna and Jayasankar Menon, Krishna’s achievement and success at the World Athletics category F event still remains 1.58 metres behind to secure India’s all-time record in shot put. The record is currently held by Abha Khatua with an 18.41m across both indoor and outdoor events scored at the 2024 Federation Cup.
Krishna’s previous records
Krishna started her 2026 campaign with the Nevada International, in which she won the women’s shot-put title with a best throw of 15.99m. Her dominant run continued at the New Mexico Team Open 2026. On Saturday, January 31, the Indian athlete bettered her national record in the women’s indoor shot-put category with her best throw of 16.63m.
This record was an improvement from her previous performance of 16.03m scored last year that got her the title and the gold medal. Hannah Richardson (15.94m) and Alesha Lane (14.52m) finished after her in second and third place, respectively.
In the Mexico Open, Krishna first made a decent throw of 14.45m, followed by her personal best record of 16.63m scored in the second attempt. She then went on to foul in her third attempt while making a throw of 14.82m. She, however, ended up fouling in her final throw in which she attempted 14.92m.
However, Krishna looks in good contention for this year’s Asian Games. Her current personal best record of 16.83 is better than the Athletics Federation of India’s (AFI) standard record of 16.25m.
