What Is Para Powerlifting? Commonwealth Games Rules, Records and History Explained

Para powerlifting is an adaptation of powerlifting for athletes with physical disabilities, and it features only one discipline: the bench press. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) through World Para Powerlifting.

The sport is the ultimate test of upper-body strength, and elite athletes often lift more than three times their own body weight.

How does it work?

The sport is open to both males and females with eligible impairments – including spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, amputations, and short stature. Unlike the able-bodied discipline, para athletes do not use feet for assistance and lie completely flat on a specially designed bench.

Competitors take the barbell (assisted or unassisted), wait for the chief referee to give the “start” command, lower it to their chest, hold it motionless, and press it upward to arm’s length until both elbows are fully locked. Each lifter gets three attempts, and the one who lifts the most is the winner.

Three international referees decide the outcome using a system of white and red lights, where:

Two or more white lights = good lift

Two or more red lights = no lift

A fourth attempt may be granted sometimes (at the jury’s discretion) for a world record, but it does not count towards final rankings.

History at the Commonwealth Games:

Women’s para weightlifting was added to the Commonwealth Games in 2010, during the Games at New Delhi. While the men’s sport was added much earlier during the 2002 Games in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Women’s Winners at the Commonwealth Games in para powerlifting:

In the Commonwealth Games, Para Powerlifting (often called para weightlifting) uses an AH (Haleczko) point coefficient system to allow athletes of varying bodyweights within a division to compete fairly. Official Games records and standings are scored in points, alongside the maximum weight lifted in kilograms.
