India’s emerging boxing talent delivered a statement performance on the international stage, finishing atop the medal standings at the 46th International Tammer Boxing Tournament in Tampere, Finland, on Sunday. With four gold medals, two silver and eight bronze, the Indian contingent showcased its growing depth across weight categories and underlined the importance of international exposure for its developing pugilists.

The tournament saw Indian boxers compete against opponents from several established boxing nations, with the squad returning home with a total of 14 medals. The gold-medal performances of Aarti Dhariyal, Ankushita Boro, Arundhati Chaudhary and Pawan Bartwal proved decisive in India’s successful campaign.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Arundhati Chaudhary produced a composed performance in the women’s 70kg final, defeating Ireland’s Igharo Evelyn Ivi 3:2 in a closely contested bout. Arundhati’s victory highlighted her ability to handle pressure in a competitive international final. Her experience at major competitions proved valuable as she edged past her Irish opponent to secure another significant achievement in her boxing career.

Aarti Dhariyal also delivered a commanding performance in the women’s 54kg final, defeating Scotland’s Kernachan Stephen by a unanimous 5:0 decision. Her convincing victory reflected India’s strength in the lighter women’s weight categories. Ankushita Boro added another gold to India’s tally in the women’s 65kg category.

She defeated England’s Thompstone Ella 4:1, demonstrating her ability to compete effectively against a strong international opponent. In the men’s competition, Pawan Bartwal completed India’s gold-medal quartet with an emphatic 5:0 victory over Ireland’s Louis Rooney in the 55kg final. The four victories provided India with a strong finish to its campaign, with the boxers demonstrating technical discipline, tactical awareness and composure in the decisive rounds.

India’s two silver medals came through Jaismine Lamboria and Hussam Mohammed. Jaismine, competing in the women’s 57kg category, finished second after a competitive campaign, while Hussam Mohammed secured silver in the men’s 60kg division. Their performances further strengthened India’s overall medal tally, reflecting the competitiveness of the Indian contingent across both men’s and women’s categories.

Eight Indian boxers also secured bronze medals. Vivek Meena (men’s 65kg), Hitesh (men’s 70kg), Akshay (men’s 80kg), Bobin Chauhan (men’s 90kg), Chetan Choudhary (men’s 90+kg), Tanu (women’s 51kg), Disha Patil (women’s 60kg) and Imroz Khan (women’s 75kg) completed India’s medal-winning contingent. Organised by the Tampere Boxing Association, the International Tammer Boxing Tournament has been held annually since 1977 and is considered an established fixture on the international boxing calendar.

India fielded a 14-member squad, with the selection focusing on providing international exposure to boxers ranked third in the country’s Olympic weight-category bench strength. The contingent also included top-ranked pugilists in Olympic weight categories that are not part of the Asian Games programme. The approach reflects India’s broader effort to strengthen its boxing bench strength and ensure that more athletes gain experience against international opposition. Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh welcomed the team’s performance and highlighted its importance in the country’s preparations for future international competitions.

“The results reflect the progress we are making in building depth across weight categories and give us confidence as we prepare for the LA Olympics qualifying events,” said Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh. India’s top finish at the Tammer Boxing Tournament represents more than an impressive medal haul. The performances of its emerging boxers point towards a growing pool of talent capable of competing at the international level.

While established names continue to provide experience and leadership, the success of younger and developing athletes is essential to India’s long-term ambitions in boxing. The challenge now will be to translate these performances into consistent results at larger international competitions. With the Los Angeles Olympics on the horizon, India’s ability to build depth across weight categories could prove crucial in strengthening its medal prospects.

For now, the 14-medal campaign in Finland offers a positive indication of the progress being made in Indian boxing, with Arundhati Chaudhary and her teammates providing fresh momentum to the country’s preparations for future global challenges.
