On Tuesday, April 7, India ended on a hopeful note in the ongoing Billie Jean King Asia tournament. India’s hopes now rest with Sahaja Yamalapalli, who ended the suspended match against Thailand with a 1-0 advantage in the opening tie after training. The game was called off due to rain interruption.

The game started after three hours due to heavy rains and drizzle conditions. After India was trailing by 3-4 against Thailand’s Patcharin Cheapchandej, the players were forced off the court and the match was suspended. Despite that, India’s No. 2 and World No. 384 have kept the hosts still in contention in the tournament.
In the first few games, the match went with the serve, but Patcharin found the break to take the lead, 4-2 in the first set, resulting in an advantage, 6-4. But Sahaja using her pace and power returns takes the second set by 6-1 leading the game into the decider but the game got disrupted.
Meanwhile, India suffered disappointments in the opening match from Vaishnavi Adkar who went down in straight sets by 1-6, 3-6 to Thailand’s Anchisa Chanta. She ended with multiple unforced errors.
The first set was a one-sided one with Chanta taking the win by 6-1. The second set saw the Thailand player losing her service in the opening game but through her immediate recovery, she trailed the second by 4-1.
In other rounds, Indonesia’s Priska Madelyn Nugroho and Janice Tjen won their respective singles matches against their New Zealand opponents. Meanwhile, Korea has all its women’s singles matches against Mongolia.
