Coco Gauff Reaches French Open 2026 Second Round After Tough First Round

The red clay of Roland Garros once again brought out the best in defending champion Coco Gauff as the American star overcame an early scare to launch her French Open 2026 campaign with authority on Tuesday. Playing under intense Paris heat on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Gauff defeated fellow American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-0 to storm into the second round and continue her impressive record at the clay-court Grand Slam.

The victory marked another confident step in Gauff’s growing legacy at Roland Garros, a venue that has become synonymous with some of the biggest moments of her young career. After lifting the French Open trophy last year by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final, Gauff returned to Paris carrying both expectations and pressure as one of the leading faces of women’s tennis.

Despite the dominant final scoreline, the match did not begin comfortably for the fourth seed. Townsend came out aggressively and immediately tested Gauff with sharp angles and attacking play. The defending champion struggled to settle into rhythm during the opening exchanges and found herself on the verge of falling two breaks behind in the first set.

However, Gauff’s composure under pressure once again proved decisive. The 22-year-old steadied her serve, extended rallies from the baseline, and gradually began dictating the tempo of the contest. Townsend, who had defeated Gauff in their only previous meeting back in 2019, was unable to maintain the same level as the match progressed.

Gauff appeared ready to close out the opening set at 5-3 but briefly faltered with a double fault on set point. Instead of allowing frustration to creep in, she immediately regrouped and broke Townsend’s serve in the following game to secure the set 6-4. That moment completely shifted the momentum of the contest.

The second set turned into a showcase of Gauff’s athleticism and confidence on clay. Her movement across the court became sharper, her returns deeper, and her defensive retrievals frustrated Townsend repeatedly. In just 24 minutes, Gauff wrapped up the second set 6-0 to complete one of the most commanding performances of the opening round. “I have so many great memories ‌on this court,” Gauff, who beat Aryna Sabalenka in the final last year, said. “I was a little nervous going out today, that showed a bit, ‌but I was able to find my calm.”

The scorching conditions in Paris added another layer of difficulty for players throughout the day, with temperatures reportedly climbing above 30 degrees Celsius. During changeovers, Gauff was seen applying ice towels to stay cool, although she later downplayed the impact of the weather. According to reports from Paris, several players struggled physically during the heatwave conditions at Roland Garros.

Gauff’s smooth progress into the second round also strengthened her bid to become the first American woman since Chris Evert to successfully defend the French Open title. Clay has increasingly become Gauff’s strongest surface, with the American consistently producing deep runs in Paris over the past several seasons. Since her breakthrough years as a teenager, she has transformed into one of the most complete players on the WTA Tour, blending elite defensive skills with improved aggression and maturity in big moments.

The reigning champion now advances with confidence into the next round, where she is expected to face Egypt’s Mayar Sherif. While tougher challenges undoubtedly lie ahead, Gauff’s ability to recover from a shaky start and quickly dominate proceedings sent an early warning to the rest of the women’s draw.
