WTA Finals to Move From Riyadh to Indian Wells for 2026 Season Finale

The season ending showcase of women’s tennis will have a new home in 2026 after the Women’s Tennis Association confirmed that the WTA Finals will move from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to Indian Wells, California. The decision marks a significant shift for one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments, ending the Saudi hosting agreement a year earlier than originally planned.

Scheduled to take place from November 8 to 15 at the renowned Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the tournament will feature the world’s top eight singles players and doubles teams, all battling for the biggest title outside the four Grand Slam championships. The move also returns the event to one of the sport’s most celebrated venues, often referred to as the “Tennis Paradise” because of its world class facilities and passionate fan support.

The WTA Finals had been staged in Riyadh since 2024 under a three year agreement announced in April of that year. However, the partnership has now concluded after two editions following a mutual decision between the WTA and the Saudi Tennis Federation.

In a joint statement, both organisations confirmed the change.“The WTA requested to move the 2026 WTA Finals to a new host location,” the organisation said in an earlier joint statement.

“The Saudi Tennis Federation accepted WTA’s proposal, and the two organizations mutually agreed on the conclusion of the hosting arrangement.”

Neither organisation provided a specific reason for the relocation. However, the announcement comes at a time when several international sporting events in the region have faced disruption following heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East after military conflict earlier this year.

The move also ends a chapter that generated considerable debate when Riyadh was first selected as host. While the partnership brought record prize money and investment into women’s tennis, it also attracted criticism from human rights groups and former players who questioned the decision to stage the WTA’s flagship event in Saudi Arabia.

At the same time, the WTA maintained that hosting the tournament there created opportunities to expand women’s participation in tennis and support community development programmes.

Indian Wells now steps in as the new venue, adding another prestigious event to a facility that already hosts the annual BNP Paribas Open, one of the largest combined ATP and WTA tournaments outside the Grand Slams. The Indian Wells Tennis Garden features one of the biggest purpose built tennis stadiums in the world and has consistently been voted among players’ favourite venues on the professional tour.

Welcoming the announcement, WTA Chair Valerie Camillo expressed confidence that the California venue would provide the ideal stage for the sport’s season finale.

“The Indian Wells Tennis Garden provides an exceptional stage for the WTA Finals,” said Valerie Camillo, chair of the WTA. “From its world-class facilities and passionate fan base to its proven ability to deliver premier tennis events, the venue offers everything needed to showcase the very best of women’s tennis.”

The relocation is expected to provide greater accessibility for fans and broadcasters while allowing the tournament to capitalise on an established tennis market in the United States. Indian Wells has built a reputation for attracting large crowds, excellent playing conditions and strong television audiences, factors that are expected to benefit the WTA Finals as the organisation continues to seek long term stability for its marquee championship.

The governing body has also indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding a permanent host venue beyond 2026. Players have also welcomed the decision. Former champion Coco Gauff described Indian Wells as a fitting stage for the tournament and expressed hope that the WTA Finals would eventually establish a permanent home after several years of changing venues.

Fellow American Jessica Pegula also highlighted the importance of consistency for the event, noting that recent relocations had largely been driven by circumstances beyond the sport’s control. Last year’s edition saw Elena Rybakina emerge as champion after defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final. Rybakina’s unbeaten run earned her a record prize payout, underlining the growing commercial strength of the tournament.

As the race to qualify intensifies over the coming months, the world’s leading players will now set their sights on Indian Wells rather than Riyadh. With its iconic setting, modern infrastructure and rich tennis heritage, the Californian venue is expected to provide a fitting backdrop for the climax of the 2026 women’s tennis season and another memorable battle among the sport’s elite.
