Elena Rybakina strengthened her bid to finish the 2026 season as the world’s top-ranked women’s tennis player with a commanding straight-sets victory over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the Ningbo Open final on Sunday. The Kazakhstani star defended her title with a 6-2, 6-2 win, securing her first trophy since reaching the summit of the WTA rankings and delivering a timely statement ahead of the season-ending WTA Finals.

On the same day in Osaka, Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova produced an equally emphatic performance, defeating American Ashlyn Krueger 6-1, 6-0 to win the Japan Open singles title. The two finals offered contrasting but equally compelling demonstrations of control, with Rybakina relying on her powerful baseline game and Siniakova dismantling her opponent through precision, consistency and relentless pressure.
The world No. 1 entered the final as the favourite and justified that status with an authoritative display at the WTA 500 tournament in Ningbo, China. Facing the unseeded Fernandez, ranked 30th in the world, Rybakina used her serve and aggressive groundstrokes to dictate the tempo and prevent the Canadian from establishing a sustained rhythm.
The decisive moment in the opening set arrived in the fifth game. Rybakina broke Fernandez’s serve before producing a powerful cross-court backhand winner to move into a 4-2 lead. The 27-year-old continued to apply pressure, capitalising on her ability to hit through the court and forcing Fernandez to defend from increasingly difficult positions. Rybakina wrapped up the first set 6-2 in 38 minutes, establishing a platform for the remainder of the contest.
Her combination of power and composure proved particularly effective against a player who had worked hard to reach the final. Fernandez attempted to respond at the start of the second set, showing greater aggression and looking to disrupt Rybakina’s rhythm. However, the top seed absorbed the early pressure, raised her level and secured a crucial break to move 2-1 ahead.
From that point, Rybakina maintained control, limiting Fernandez’s opportunities and continuing to dictate exchanges from the baseline. She closed out the second set 6-2 to seal the championship without dropping a set in the final. The Ningbo triumph marked Rybakina’s fourth title of the 2026 season and the 15th singles title of her professional career. Having won the Australian Open and US Open earlier in the year, she has enjoyed one of the strongest campaigns on the WTA Tour and now has further momentum as she approaches the season-ending championships.
The victory was particularly important after disappointing results in Beijing and Wuhan. By successfully defending her Ningbo crown, Rybakina demonstrated her ability to recover from setbacks and return to winning form at a crucial stage of the season. She will next turn her attention to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo before beginning her title defence at the WTA Finals, scheduled to take place in Indian Wells from November 8 to 15. With the year-end No. 1 ranking still a major target, every result in the closing stretch of the season could prove significant.
Fernandez, meanwhile, will take positives from another strong tournament run. The Canadian had reached the final after navigating challenging matches throughout the week, but Rybakina’s power and consistency proved too difficult to overcome in the championship match. In Osaka, Siniakova delivered a dominant performance against Krueger to claim her first singles title in three years. The Czech player needed just 64 minutes to complete a 6-1, 6-0 victory, winning 10 consecutive games after initially trailing 1-2 in the opening set.
Krueger, the 2023 Japan Open champion, entered the final looking to add another title to her collection. However, Siniakova’s deep groundstrokes, precise placement and ability to redirect powerful shots consistently prevented the American from taking control. The Czech broke Krueger’s serve six times, steadily building pressure as the match progressed. Once she established control in the opening set, Siniakova offered her opponent little opportunity to recover, completing a comprehensive straight-sets victory.
The title was Siniakova’s sixth career WTA singles crown and her first since winning the Jiangxi Open in Nanchang, China, in 2023. Better known for her success in doubles, where she has established herself among the leading players on the circuit, the Osaka triumph provided a significant boost to her singles campaign.
The victories in Ningbo and Osaka underline two different routes to success in professional tennis. Rybakina’s title defence reinforced her standing at the top of the women’s game, while Siniakova’s breakthrough ended a three-year wait for another singles trophy. For Rybakina, the challenge now is to sustain her form against the strongest players at the WTA Finals and convert her season-long consistency into the year-end No. 1 ranking.
For Siniakova, the Japan Open victory offers an opportunity to build greater confidence in singles. Both champions leave the Asian swing with silverware, but their next tests will determine how far this late-season momentum carries them.
