The 33rd edition of the 2025 SEA Games were held in Thailand from December 9 to 20, with Bangkok and Chonburi hosting the event. A total of 13,657 athletes are competing across 11 nations in a multi-event with around 50 sports, ranging from Olympic to the traditional ones.
Over 10 participating nations are also hosts including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Brunei Darussalam, and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.
On December 10, Cambodia, however, withdrew themselves as delegates of the 2025 SEA Games amid safety concerns. Singapore was the first to win a medal in the tournament. They won bronze in the women’s team event.
The opening ceremony of the event was held on December 9 at the Rajamangala National Stadium.
Table toppers Thailand bagged their first women’s ice hockey gold medal at the SEA Games. Thailand defeated the Philippines on Friday, December 19, at the Thailand International Ice Hockey Arena on Rama IX Road. This was the first-ever participation of a women’s team event in the SEA Games.
Thailand secured a dominant 13-4 victory over the Philippines in a three-round contest and secured a landmark victory as the host nation. The Philippines ended in second position with the silver medal. The achievement is also a major milestone for Thailand’s women’s ice hockey team while contributing towards its increased progress and competitiveness.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Kamonchanok Kwanmuang, also known as the Mermaid Noy, became the first swimming gold medalist for Thailand at the SEA Games. She concluded her campaign with four gold medals in the tournament. Participating in the women’s 10-kilometre marathon swimming event, Kamonchanok finished with a time of 02:06:30, which was her fourth gold medal of the SEA Games. The female swimmer showcased a fighting spirit in the water.
Kamonchanok won eight medals in the SEA Games 2025 and is named among the top Thai athletes. Her four gold medals came in the 200 m Butterfly, 400 m Individual Medley, 4×200 m Freestyle Relay and 10 km Marathon Swimming. She won two silver medals in the 400 m Freestyle and 200 m Individual Medley, respectively, and two bronzes, including the 800 m Freestyle and 4×100 m Medley Relay race.
