Leylah Fernandez Beats Alex Eala in Straight Sets at Porsche Tennis Grand Prix Stuttgart

On Wednesday, April 15, two of WTA’s rising stars clashed against each other for the 2026 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Among them, Leylah Fernandez defeated Alex Eala in straight sets in the Round of 32 in Stuttgart. The 20-year-old was beaten by sets of 1-6, 4-6, going against the World No. 25 Fernandez.

In the opening game, Fernandez started to put pressure and broke Eala’s serve with her signature lefty forehand. With that, she went on to take the lead by 4-0 and kept Eala behind the baseline, who, on many occasions, rushed her shot selection. Later in the fifth game, Eala got an advantage by earning a breakpoint from rally tolerance.

Meanwhile, Fernandez remained composed even under pressure and converted the threat with her serve and sharp angles to extend. With that, she earned her lead to 5-0. Eala somehow tries to get into the lead in the sixth game, but Fernandez takes the upper hand, closing out the opening set by 6-1.

Moving into the second set, Fernandez continues to dominate from the start while breaking Eala in the third game. Through baseline exchanges, consistent depth and shot placement, she went on to take the lead by 3-1. In the seventh game, she got another break to surge into the lead by 5-2 and earned the serve in the next game against Eala.

Showing late resistance, Eala counters with a timely break and holds on the serve to get to 4-5. She goes on to pressure Fernandez, coming close to the final stretch. In the 10th game, Fernandez, after facing a 0-30 deficit, emerges and performs composed shot-making and claims points. She quickly builds momentum and takes the win in straight set. In the game, Fernandez held the edge by winning 61% of points compared to Eala’s 40%.

Despite the shortcomings and losses faced, Eala now aims to compete in the Mutua Madrid Open, which will be her first WTA 1000 event of the clay season.
