Australia Storm into Women’s T20 World Cup Final with Dominant Win Over West Indies

Australia underlined their status as the benchmark of women’s T20 cricket with another commanding display, defeating the West Indies by eight wickets to book a place in their eighth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final. A clinical bowling effort, followed by an unbeaten match-winning partnership between Beth Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner, ensured the six-time champions comfortably chased down 126 with seven overs to spare at The Oval in London.

The victory extended Australia’s unbeaten run in the tournament and moved them one step closer to a record-extending seventh Women’s T20 World Cup title. They will now face either England or South Africa in the final at Lord’s.

After electing to bowl, Australia once again showcased the depth and discipline of their bowling attack, particularly through their spin trio. Ashleigh Gardner delivered a superb spell of 2 for 13 from her four overs, while Georgia Wareham and Sophie Molineux chipped in with two wickets each to restrict the West Indies to 125 for 7.

Despite a promising opening stand, the Caribbean side failed to capitalize after losing wickets in clusters during the middle overs. Hayley Matthews top-scored with 30 from 28 balls, while Deandra Dottin produced a spirited unbeaten 26 off just 16 deliveries after overcoming a frightening pre-match medical scare.

Moments before the start of play, Dottin was forced off the field following the national anthems after suffering an undisclosed medical issue. She spent around half an hour receiving treatment before making a remarkable return later in the innings at No. 8. Her late cameo, featuring four boundaries, gave West Indies a respectable total after they had slumped to 83 for 6.

Australia’s spin attack was once again the difference. Gardner struck immediately after the powerplay, dismissing veteran Stafanie Taylor for a second-ball duck before removing Jahzara Claxton in a wicket maiden that completely shifted momentum. Wareham also delivered a crucial breakthrough when she clean bowled Matthews with a clever leg break after the West Indies captain attempted an ambitious scoop. Matthews’ dismissal triggered a collapse that saw the Caribbean side lose four wickets for just 12 runs in 17 deliveries.

Sophie Molineux complemented the attack with disciplined left-arm spin, while Kim Garth and Annabel Sutherland kept the scoring under control during the powerplay. Australia’s fielding was equally sharp despite a couple of dropped chances, ensuring the West Indies never managed to build a substantial partnership after the opening stand.

Chasing 126, Australia suffered two early setbacks as Georgia Voll and Phoebe Litchfield departed inside the powerplay. The innings faced another moment of concern when Ellyse Perry retired hurt after scoring two from seven deliveries due to discomfort in her quadriceps. However, any hopes of a West Indies comeback quickly disappeared once Beth Mooney settled into her rhythm.

The experienced opener produced another masterclass in chasing, finishing unbeaten on 61 from just 36 deliveries, an innings decorated with eight boundaries. Calm under pressure and fluent throughout, Mooney rotated strike efficiently before punishing anything loose. Her knock also carried historical significance. The half-century was her eighth in Women’s T20 World Cup history, drawing level with New Zealand great Suzie Bates for the most fifties in the tournament’s history.

Joining her after Perry’s retirement, Gardner continued her outstanding all-round tournament with a brisk unbeaten 35 off only 20 balls. The pair added an unbroken 63 runs from just 37 deliveries, removing any remaining doubt about the outcome. Gardner, who had also scored a match-winning fifty against India in Australia’s final group match, completed another memorable all-round performance by striking the winning boundary through square leg.

Australia reached 127 for 2 in only 13 overs, completing one of the most comprehensive victories ever recorded in a Women’s T20 World Cup knockout fixture.

For the West Indies, the defeat brought an end to an encouraging campaign in which they reached the semi-finals despite a difficult group stage. Their hopes of causing an upset against Australia were always going to require an exceptional performance, but the middle-order collapse proved too costly to recover from.

Australia, meanwhile, continued to demonstrate why they remain the dominant force in world cricket. Having reached the semi-finals in every edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup, they now stand on the verge of yet another global title. With an experienced core, emerging young talent and an unmatched balance between bat and ball, they head into the final as overwhelming favourites to add another trophy to an already remarkable legacy.
