India’s road to a first women’s Hockey World Cup title will begin against three familiar but very different challenges, with China, England and South Africa standing between the Savita Punia-led side and a place in the next stage of a radically reworked tournament.
The FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026 will get underway on August 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium, with 16 teams competing for the sport’s biggest prize. The tournament will run until August 30 and, for the first time in recent World Cup editions, the route to the semifinals will not pass through a traditional quarterfinal stage.
India have been placed in Pool D alongside China, England and South Africa, with their matches being played in the Netherlands. The other three pools feature defending champions Netherlands, Australia, Chile and Japan in Pool A; Argentina, Germany, USA and Scotland in Pool B; and hosts Belgium, Spain, New Zealand and Ireland in Pool C.
The top two teams from each pool will advance to a second group phase. The first and second-placed teams from Pools A and D will form Group E, while the top two from Pools B and C will form Group F. The third and fourth-placed teams will similarly move into Groups G and H for classification matches.
The format makes India’s opening three games especially important. Unlike a conventional knockout structure, where a team can recover from a poor pool-stage result and still progress through a quarterfinal, the 2026 system carries the result between the two teams that advance from the same opening pool into the second phase.
In other words, India cannot simply target qualification. They will want to qualify with maximum points and momentum. India’s opening assignment comes against China on August 16, followed by England and South Africa. The official schedule lists India’s first match against China at 1 p.m. local time in Amsterdam.
England, in particular, will represent a significant test. The two sides have regularly encountered each other on the international circuit, while China bring a different tactical challenge and South Africa will look to disrupt the established order in Pool D. For India, the tournament comes after a major boost in confidence from their recent international campaign. The team secured qualification for the World Cup through the FIH Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, where India topped Pool B and went on to secure their place at the global tournament.
The qualification journey itself underlined the depth of competition India will encounter. Eight teams competed in Hyderabad for World Cup places, with India, Scotland, Uruguay and Wales making up Pool B. The top two sides from each pool advanced to the semifinals, with the semifinal winners and bronze-medal winner securing automatic World Cup qualification.
India will now have to translate that qualification momentum onto the biggest stage. The Netherlands enter the tournament as the team to beat. They won the 2022 women’s World Cup, their ninth title in 15 editions, underlining their extraordinary dominance in the competition. Australia, Argentina, Germany and Belgium will also provide serious competition as India look to progress deep into the tournament.
The 2026 edition is also significant because the men’s and women’s World Cups are being staged simultaneously across the Netherlands and Belgium. Matches will be played at Amsterdam’s Wagener Stadium and the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, with both venues hosting semifinals.
For Indian hockey, the challenge is therefore bigger than simply navigating three pool matches. The new structure demands consistency, tactical discipline and an ability to manage points across two phases of competition.
There is no quarterfinal waiting at the end of the opening stage. There is instead another group, another two matches and another opportunity to either strengthen or lose control of the campaign. India’s first target will be straightforward: finish in the top two. The bigger objective will be to do so in a position of strength. Because in this World Cup, the road to the medal rounds begins long before the knockout stages. For India, it begins with China.
