PV Sindhu Returns From Three-Month Break to Lead India at Badminton Asia Championships 2026

India has been waiting for 61-years for a Badminton Asia Championship singles title. Two-time Olympic gold medalist PV Sindhu, the sole contender in the women’s singles title, is eying to end the country’s drought this season. Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen is headed for the men’s singles title.

Sindhu is making her return after the Dubai incident. Her visit for the All England Championship in England she and her team were left stranded in Dubai due to conflicts in the West Asia region. Subsequently, she had to force exit from the tournament. She had also withdrawn from the Swiss Open to recover from injury.

Making her comeback, Sindhu will begin her campaign against Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching. Apart from Sindhu, the women’s singles will see India’s Unnati Hooda going against Thailand’s Supanida Katethong. Meanwhile Tanvi Sharma will take on Malaysia’s K. Letshanaa, and Malvika Bansod will face Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

In women’s doubles, Ashwini Bhat K. and Shikha Gautam will go against Thailand’s Hathaithip Mijad and N. Tungkasatan. The top seeded duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela will clash against China’s Luo Yi and Wang Ting Ge. Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra are yet to receive their qualifier.

In the mixed doubles event, India’s Rohan Kapoor and Gadde Ruthvika Shivani will face Malaysia’s eighth seeds Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie. Meanwhile, the duo of Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh will clash against Malaysia’s Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien. Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto will take on Thailand’s P. Horbanluekit and Benyapa Aimsaard.

India’s previous records in the Badminton Asia Championships includes two gold medals. In 1965 it was Dinesh Khanna winning the men’s singles and the 2023 win by the men’s double pair of Satwik-Chirag.
