Indian badminton player Ashmita Chaliha produced one of her most encouraging performances of the season at the Macau Open Super 300, reaching the women’s singles semi-finals before her campaign came to an end against South Korea’s Park Ga Eun on Saturday. Despite the defeat, the tournament marked a significant step forward for the Assamese shuttler, who has been steadily rebuilding momentum after an injury setback earlier this year.
World No. 63 Ashmita went down 17-21, 9-21 to Park in a 38-minute semi-final clash at the East Asian Games Dome in Macau. The result brought India’s challenge in the tournament to a close, but it also highlighted the growing consistency of a player who has quietly emerged as one of India’s most determined performers on the BWF World Tour.
The left-hander entered the contest brimming with confidence after a string of impressive victories during the week. In the quarter-finals, she had defeated South Korea’s Kim Min Sun in straight games to secure her place in the last four. It was her first semi-final appearance on the BWF World Tour this year and another sign that her return from injury is gathering pace.
Against Park Ga Eun, Ashmita began brightly and looked capable of causing another upset. She controlled the early exchanges with sharp shot placement and intelligent court coverage, racing to a 15-11 advantage in the opening game.
