Smriti Mandhana Surpasses Rohit Sharma as India’s All-Time Top T20I Run-Scorer

Indian cricket witnessed a significant shift in its record books as Smriti Mandhana etched her name at the very top of the country’s T20I run charts. The elegant left-hander overtook Rohit Sharma during the first T20I between India Women and South Africa Women at Kingsmead, Durban, marking a defining moment in her already remarkable career.

Mandhana entered the match on the brink of history, having equalled Rohit’s tally of 4231 runs earlier in the year during India’s tour of Australia. It took just a single off Sune Luus for her to move past the former Indian men’s captain and claim the top spot outright. The milestone reflects not just longevity but consistency at the highest level of the shortest format.

Despite the landmark achievement, Mandhana’s stay at the crease was shorter than she would have preferred. She scored 13 runs from 14 deliveries, including a well-timed six, before being dismissed by Ayabonga Khaka. Her dismissal came at a moment when she looked set to build a substantial innings, adding a touch of frustration to an otherwise historic outing.

Mandhana’s innings began with assurance and composure. Opening alongside Shafali Verma, she showed her trademark fluency, finding gaps with precision and rotating the strike effectively. Her early boundaries included a crisp drive down the ground and a controlled flick through the leg side, both indicative of her timing and balance.

As the innings progressed, Mandhana shifted gears with calculated aggression. One of the standout moments came against Chloe Tryon, when she picked the length early and dispatched the ball for a powerful six over backward square leg. The shot underlined her ability to dominate spin and seize momentum. The opening partnership between Mandhana and Shafali yielded 46 runs in just five overs, providing India with a brisk start after being put in to bat.

Their contrasting styles complemented each other well, with Mandhana anchoring the innings while Shafali played her naturally attacking game. However, the rhythm was disrupted soon after Shafali’s dismissal to Tumi Sekhukhune. Mandhana attempted to continue the attacking approach but fell while trying to drive a full delivery from Khaka. The ball did not stay down, resulting in a sharp catch by Laura Wolvaardt at cover.

In terms of overall numbers, Mandhana now boasts 4,244 runs in 161 T20I matches, averaging just over 30 with a strike rate exceeding 124. Her record includes one century and 33 half centuries, placing her among the most reliable performers in women’s T20 cricket globally. Rohit Sharma, whose T20I career concluded after India’s triumph at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, finished with 4,231 runs in 159 matches. His record featured five centuries and 32 half centuries, and he had long been India’s benchmark in the format.

Mandhana’s rise to the top reflects the growing stature of women’s cricket in India. Over the past decade, she has been a central figure in India’s batting lineup, delivering consistently across conditions and against top opposition. Her ability to combine elegance with efficiency has made her one of the most watchable batters in the modern game. While the milestone was a personal triumph, Mandhana will be focused on making a bigger impact in the remainder of the series.

With another match scheduled at the same venue, India will look to bounce back strongly, and their vice captain will aim to convert starts into match-winning contributions. This record is more than just a statistical achievement. It signals a changing landscape where performances in women’s cricket are increasingly shaping the broader narrative of the sport in India.
