India will arrive at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England carrying both confidence and momentum after a productive run across conditions. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side scripted a landmark 2-1 T20I series win in Australia, one of their most significant overseas achievements in the format, and although they later suffered a 4-1 defeat in South Africa, the team showed resilience and signs of recovery as the series progressed.

Before the World Cup begins, India will also play a T20I series against England, giving them a valuable opportunity to acclimatise to local conditions and fine-tune combinations against one of the tournament favourites. In English conditions, where early seam movement, sharp fielding and quality spin often decide matches, five players could be especially crucial

Smriti Mandhana

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana remains India’s most dependable T20I batter. With more than 4,200 T20I runs, an average of 30 and a strike rate near 125, she is among the format’s most accomplished openers. Mandhana enters the tournament on the back of key performances in overseas conditions. During India’s series-clinching win in Australia, she struck 82 off 55 balls, controlling the innings with clean strokeplay and helping India post a match-winning total.

She has also already conquered English conditions. In the first T20I at Trent Bridge in 2025, Mandhana hammered 112 off 62 balls, the first T20I hundred by an Indian woman. Her innings included 15 fours and three sixes and underlined how dangerous she can be once set. If Mandhana provides stable starts, India becomes a far stronger side.

Shafali Verma

Few batters in women’s cricket can shift momentum like Shafali Verma. The opener has already crossed 2,500 T20I runs and continues to score at one of the highest strike rates in the international game. Her recent form has been encouraging. In South Africa, she produced 64 off 46 balls in Johannesburg and 57 off 38 in Durban, giving India rapid starts against quality bowling attacks.

In England last year, she smashed 75 off 41 balls at Edgbaston, striking 13 boundaries in a match-winning display. Shafali’s role is clear: attack early, unsettle bowlers and maximise the powerplay. If she bats beyond the first six overs, India often gains immediate control. She can also contribute an over or two with the ball, clinching crucial wickets when needed, making her a genuine game-changing option.

Harmanpreet Kaur

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur remains the centre of India’s T20 side. With more than 3,900 T20I runs across nearly 200 matches, she is among the most experienced players in the format and continues to be India’s most trusted batter in pressure situations.

Unlike top-order players who rely on long starts, Harmanpreet’s value often comes in high-pressure phases, rebuilding after early wickets, attacking spin through the middle overs or finishing strongly at the death. She showed that value again during India’s recent tours. On a tougher South Africa tour, she answered with aggressive knocks of 66 off 38 balls in Johannesburg and 56 off 34 in the final T20I, underlining her ability to respond when the side needed leadership.

Shreyanka Patil

Shreyanka Patil has quickly developed into one of India’s most exciting T20 prospects. Though still early in her international career, she has already shown the temperament to influence matches with both bat and ball. In 21 T20I matches, she has 28 wickets at an average of 18.60.

She starred in India’s Australia series win, taking three wickets in the decider to break the hosts’ chase. On the South Africa tour, she also claimed 2 for 26 in Durban, where other Indian bowlers struggled to provide breakthroughs. Her WPL performances have further established her as a wicket-taking off-spinner who can contribute quick runs late in the innings. Shreyanka’s greatest strength is intent, she bowls to dismiss batters rather than simply contain them.

N Sree Charani

Left-arm spinner N Sree Charani has rapidly emerged as a serious option. In the 2025 England tour, she announced herself with a stunning 4 for 12 in 3.5 overs on debut at Trent Bridge as India bowled England out for 113.

She followed that with 2 for 30 in Manchester during India’s series-clinching victory. Those performances highlighted her control, confidence and ability to adapt quickly to overseas conditions. Charani gives India another attacking spin option alongside Shreyanka, especially valuable in middle overs.

India’s route to success may depend on these five roles coming together. With momentum from Australia, valuable lessons from South Africa and multiple match-winners in form, India will believe they have the tools to mount a serious World Cup challenge in England.
