Just over a year after making her international debut, Indian spinner Sree Charani has achieved one of the biggest milestones in world cricket. The 21-year-old left-arm spinner has climbed to the No. 1 position in the latest ICC Women’s T20I Bowling Rankings, becoming the highest-ranked T20I bowler in the world following a sensational start to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Charani’s rapid rise reflects both her remarkable consistency and her growing importance within India’s bowling attack. Entering the tournament as one of the team’s emerging talents, she has quickly established herself as one of the standout performers of the competition and is currently the leading wicket-taker of the World Cup.
The latest rankings update sees Charani move ahead of England spinner Linsey Smith, who had occupied the top position prior to the tournament. Strong performances in England conditions have helped the Indian spinner leapfrog several established names and claim the premier ranking for the first time in her career. Her success has been built on a string of match-winning performances during the ongoing tournament. Charani has collected 10 wickets in just three matches, an extraordinary return that has played a crucial role in India’s campaign.
One of her standout displays came against the Netherlands in Leeds, where she registered the second four-wicket haul of her international career. The left-arm spinner dismantled the Dutch batting line-up with her accuracy, flight and ability to generate turn, finishing with figures that further strengthened her position among the tournament’s leading bowlers.
She followed that performance with another impressive outing against South Africa in Manchester. Despite India’s defeat, Charani once again demonstrated her ability to perform under pressure, picking up three wickets and troubling some of the world’s most accomplished batters. The combination of those performances proved enough to propel her to the top of the rankings, marking a remarkable achievement for a player who only entered international cricket a little over 12 months ago.
Charani’s rise is another positive sign for Indian women’s cricket, which continues to produce young players capable of competing at the highest level. The spinner first gained attention through domestic cricket and age-group tournaments before earning her national call-up. Since then, she has steadily developed into one of India’s most reliable wicket-taking options in the shortest format.
The rankings update also reflects significant movement among several other leading bowlers. England’s Charlie Dean climbed to second place after claiming five wickets from her first three matches of the T20 World Cup. Former No. 1 Sophie Ecclestone also made gains, moving up four positions to fourth place after a strong start to the tournament.
Meanwhile, several bowlers registered notable jumps in the rankings. West Indies captain Hayley Matthews rose nine places to 11th, Australia’s Kim Garth surged 25 spots to reach 20th, Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana moved up to 25th, while Ireland all-rounder Orla Prendergast climbed to 26th following a series of impressive performances.
While the bowling rankings witnessed significant changes, the batting rankings remained relatively stable. Australia opener Georgia Voll retained her position as the No. 1 ranked T20I batter despite scoring 62 runs across her first three matches of the World Cup. Her consistency over recent months has allowed her to maintain a healthy lead at the summit.
Australian teammate Beth Mooney strengthened her position among the leading batters by moving up one place to second. India’s batting unit also enjoyed success in the rankings update, with Shafali Verma climbing one spot to sixth and captain Harmanpreet Kaur improving to 10th place. Elsewhere, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine moved up to 11th, Ireland’s Orla Prendergast continued her impressive rise by reaching 13th, and Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana Joty advanced three places to enter the top 20.
The all-rounders’ rankings saw fewer changes at the top. Hayley Matthews retained her place as the world’s leading T20I all-rounder, maintaining her advantage over New Zealand star Melie Kerr. Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu improved to third place, while Prendergast continued her upward trajectory by moving into fifth. Pakistan captain Fatima Sana also entered the top six, reflecting her growing influence in international cricket.
One of the biggest movers among all-rounders was South African star Marizanne Kapp. Fresh from her Player of the Match performance against India at the World Cup, Kapp climbed five places to ninth position.
For India, however, the headline belongs to Charani. Her rise to the top of the bowling rankings is not only a personal milestone but also an indication of the strength and depth emerging within India’s women’s cricket setup. With the T20 World Cup entering its decisive stages, India will hope their young spin sensation can continue her remarkable form and help drive the team towards a deep run in the tournament.
At just 21 years of age, Charani has already achieved what many cricketers spend entire careers chasing. If her performances over the past few weeks are any indication, this could be only the beginning of a long and successful journey at the highest level.
