The Kerala-born footballer has steadily progressed through grassroots football, domestic leagues, and youth competitions to reach the India women’s national team. Her journey reflects both her personal perseverance and the gradual development of women’s football opportunities in southern India.
Malavika Prasad was born on 12 November 2003 in Kasaragod, Kerala, a region where football has a passionate following. Growing up in northern Kerala, she developed an early interest in the sport and began playing in local competitions during her school years.
Despite football’s popularity in the state, opportunities for girls were limited, especially in terms of training facilities and professional pathways. Malavika faced challenges such as limited access to quality grounds and financial constraints, which are common obstacles for many young female athletes in India.
However, her dedication and determination allowed her to continue pursuing football while steadily improving her skills. She represented Kerala at the sub-junior girls’ level during the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons, gaining early experience in state and national youth tournaments.
Malavika’s domestic football journey has included several clubs across India, where she gained experience and developed her attacking abilities. Early in her career, she played for teams such as: Kerala Blasters FC (Women’s Team), ASOS Rainbow Athletic Club, Kemp Football Club, Travancore Royals Football Club, Misaka United FC
These clubs provided her with opportunities to compete in regional and national tournaments, helping her refine her skills as an attacking player. Her career faced a setback in 2023, when Kerala Blasters temporarily suspended the activities of their women’s football team due to financial and logistical challenges. As a result, Malavika had to look for opportunities elsewhere to continue her professional development.
She eventually joined Sethu FC, one of the prominent clubs competing in the Indian Women’s League (IWL). At Sethu FC, she continued her growth as a forward and gained exposure to top-level domestic competition.
Malavika’s performances in domestic competitions and state tournaments caught the attention of national team selectors. In 2025, she was included in the 32-player list of probable players for the Indian women’s national team training camp held in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.
The camp was organised by national team head coach Crispin Chettri in preparation for the Pink Ladies Cup, an international tournament held in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Being included in the national camp marked a major milestone in Malavika’s career and signaled her growing reputation within Indian women’s football.
Malavika Prasad made her senior international debut for India on 30 May 2025 during a FIFA Women’s International Friendly against Uzbekistan. The match was played at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru, one of India’s leading football training facilities. Her debut represented an important step in her career, as she transitioned from domestic football to the international stage and became part of the expanding talent pool for the Indian women’s national team.
In July 2024, Malavika received the Kerala Football Association’s Best Female Player Award, recognising her performances and contributions to football in the state. The award highlighted her growing reputation as one of Kerala’s promising footballers and acknowledged her progress in domestic competitions.
