The football industry will miss a name in the Chelsean history. At the age of 32, Millie Bright, a centre-back player, has decided to retire from her 12-year trophy-laden career at Chelsea, in which she won eight Women’s Super League titles and six Women’s FA Cups with Chelsea comes to an end. The decision also comes into effect after the departure of Guro Reiten to Gotham, while leading to the breakdown of the “T4” era, including Bright, Sam Kerr, Erin Cuthbert, and Reiten.

Announcing her retirement news, Bright said, “Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football. I’ve given all I can and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time, and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea but just in a different way.”

Bright, a stalwart defender, announced her retirement on April 29, 2026. She was Chelsea’s record appearance holder. In 314 appearances, she won eight Women’s Super League titles and six Women’s FA Cups. She helped the team lift 20 trophies.

The defender retired from international football back in 2025. She led England in the 2022 European Championship run and in 2023 led the side to the World Cup final. She has 88 caps with the team. Since the start of 2023-24, she has been Chelsea’s club captain and has formed a core part of the team since 2014. She also helped Chelsea win every women’s trophy in the club’s history and helped them lift their first silver medal in 2015.

She has retired ahead of the final two WSL matches and May’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City. Bright was a club legend and will be honoured by the team in her final WSL game, on May 16, scheduled against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Following her retirement, the new Chelsea team wrote a heartfelt message on her exit. “Congratulations and good luck, Millie. We will be forever grateful for your contribution, and we know you are never done at Chelsea,” the club stated.

After the retirement, Bright will continue to serve the team as a trustee of their foundation and in a new role as an ambassador.
