The Scottish skipper, Weir has joined OL Lyonnes after her contract with Real Madrid ended
Caroline Weir has signed a three-year deal with OL Lyonnes until June 2029. Her contract with Real Madrid has ended, after she joined them in 2022 from Manchester United. Weir is Madrid’s highest goal scorer with 63 goals in 125 matches.
In a video posted by Lyon on X, Weir said, “I was super excited to hear that Lyon were interested. For me, it’s the club with the most history in the women’s game. To be part of this project, the ambition of the club was really in line with what I want to achieve, so I guess it was a no-brainer in so many ways to commit to this club.”
Her move to Real Madrid came after her rapid rise in 2022. The attacking midfielder has also spent her time playing for Arsenal, Bristol City, and Liverpool before she joined Manchester United in 2018.
The 30-year-old is also ranked fourth amongst Scotland’s all-time top scorers. On June 5th, Caroline bagged a hat-trick against Israel in a 6-0 win, and scored against Belgium four days later, to help Scotland finish first in their World Cup qualifying group.
Caroline said, “The time has come for me to leave this special club, I do so with a heart full of love, memories and gratitude. My only regret is that I could not give you a first title. I therefore say goodbye with sadness but also excitement to watch from afar and see this club continue to grow.”
Weir will be the first Scottish player to represent the French club.
