Vaishnavi Phalke is an Indian field hockey player who represents the Indian women’s national hockey team. She was born in the small village of Asu in Satara district, Maharashtra, and comes from a humble farming family background. Her father, who was a wrestler, always dreamt of achieving success in sports but could not win a major tournament during his career. Determined to see his daughter succeed, he encouraged Vaishnavi to pursue sports from a young age.
Vaishnavi began her early training at the Government Sports Academy in Pune and later continued her development at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune, one of the major sports training centres in Maharashtra. Initially, she tried several sports before finally choosing hockey, where her skills and determination quickly became evident.
Her competitive journey began in 2017, when she participated in the 7th Hockey India Sub-Junior Women’s National Championship held in Ramanathapuram. Her impressive performance at the 9th Hockey India Junior Women’s National Championship in 2019 in Kollam, Kerala helped her earn selection to the Indian Junior Women’s team camp. She later represented India at the FIH Junior Women’s Hockey World Cup 2021 in Potchefstroom, South Africa, where the Indian team finished fourth.
Vaishnavi continued to progress through the ranks and was named captain of the Indian Junior team for the Under-23 Five Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland in 2022. Her leadership qualities and consistent performances earned her a call-up to the Senior Indian Women’s Hockey Team camp in September 2022.
She made her senior international debut in January 2023 during the India tour of South Africa. Since then, Vaishnavi has become a regular member of the national squad and has represented India in several major international tournaments. She was part of the Indian team that won the Gold Medal at the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 in Rajgir, and also contributed to India’s Bronze Medal at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou.
Apart from representing India internationally, Vaishnavi plays domestic hockey for Hockey Maharashtra and has also represented teams such as Income Tax and Soorma Hockey Club in professional competitions like the Hockey India League.
With her strong defensive skills, midfield control, and determination, Vaishnavi Phalke has emerged as one of the promising players in Indian women’s hockey and continues to contribute significantly to the national team’s success.
