British No. 1 Emma Raducanu Parts Ways with Coach Francisco Roig After Australian Open Exit

British No. 1 tennis star Emma Raducanu has announced on social media that she will no longer work under coach Francisco Roig. The decision was taken on Thursday, January 29, after Raducanu ended her Australia Open 2026 campaign in just the second-round match played on Wednesday, January 21. The British No. 1 lost to unseeded Anastasia Potapova of Austria by sets of 7-6(3) 6-2. The 2021 U.S. Open champion parted ways with Roig after getting trained under him for six months.

The Spaniard was appointed by Raducanu on a full-time contract back in August 2025. Roig’s coaching brings experience, having trained some of the best players in Grand Slams. He has coached 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal for a long time. After the US Open victory in 2021, Raducanu has worked with eight coaches in total, including Roig, who was her ninth. The British star is currently struggling to find stability in her performance.

Announcing her decision on social media, Raducanu posted a picture of herself and Roig on the tennis court and penned down a thankful note for the Spaniard coach.

Raducanu wrote: “Francis, thank you for our time together. You have been more than a coach to me and I will cherish the many good times we spent together on and off the court. While we have come to the conclusion together that we ought not to move forward, please know that I am very grateful for all that you have taught me and fond of our time shared.”

With Roig no longer part of the British No. 1 player, Raducanu is said to work with Alexis Canter for a temporary period for the Transylvania Open in Cluj. The WTA 250 tournament held last year saw Austria’s Potapova winning the title after defeating Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti by sets of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Before Roig, Raducanu has been trained by eight coaches, namely, Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, Dmitry Tursunov, Sebastian Sachs, Nick Cavaday, Vlado Platenik, and Mark Petchey. Each of them has contributed to the British youngster’s professional career growth and development since 2021.

Cavaday is the longest-serving mentor of Raducanu, who was also her childhood coach at the Bromley Academy. Their professional partnership of 14-years ended in 2025. Under him, the British No. 1 returned to the top 60 spot. Meanwhile, Cavaday had to step down from his role due to personal health issues in 2025.
