India kept its campaign alive in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I with a commanding 3-0 victory over Mongolia in New Delhi, delivering one of its most clinical performances of the tournament so far. While the result came against comparatively lower-ranked opposition, the empathic nature of the win provided a crucial boost in confidence as the team prepared for a decisive clash against South Korea.

Competing at the DLTA Complex, the Indian side shifted to Court 1 after three days of matches on the main show court but showed no dip in intensity. The hosts wrapped up the tie in under three hours, asserting complete dominance across all three matches.

India’s charge was led by Zeel Desai, who made a memorable Billie Jean King Cup debut. Drafted into the playing lineup by captain Vishal Uppal to gain match experience, the youngster delivered a flawless performance, defeating 15-year-old Anu-Vjin Gantor 6-0, 6-0 in just 37 minutes. Desai, who had joined the national squad at short notice after withdrawing from an ITF semifinal, looked sharp and composed throughout. Her aggressive baseline play and consistency left her opponent struggling to find rhythm, with most points ending quickly.

Sahaja Yamalapalli followed up with an equally dominant display in the second singles match. She defeated Mongolia’s Jargal Altansarnai, a vastly more experienced player at 32, by the same 6-0, 6-0 scoreline. The Indian showcased precision and control, dictating rallies from the outset and capitalizing on unforced errors from her opponent. The back-to-back double bagels underlined the gulf in class between the two sides and ensured India sealed the tie without any complications.

With the tie already decided, India opted to rest senior player Ankita Raina for the doubles match. The pairing of Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale stepped in and comfortably closed out proceedings with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in under an hour.

The Indian duo displayed strong coordination and net play, keeping their Mongolian opponents under constant pressure. The match served as a valuable opportunity for squad rotation while maintaining momentum.

The Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I features six teams competing in a round-robin format, with only the top two teams progressing to the next stage of the global competition. Despite the convincing win, India remains fourth in the standings, making qualification a challenging prospect. Indonesia currently leads the table after maintaining an unbeaten run, while Thailand strengthened its position with a 3-0 victory over New Zealand. South Korea also remains in contention, setting up a crucial final tie against India.

For the hosts, the equation is straightforward yet difficult, they must secure a strong win against Korea and hope for favorable results in other matches to keep their qualification hopes alive. Although the win against Mongolia came against lower-ranked opponents, it provided much-needed match practice and restored confidence within the Indian camp. The quick turnaround also allows players additional recovery time before the high-stakes encounter against Korea.

Captain Vishal Uppal’s strategy of rotating players and giving opportunities to younger athletes appears to be paying off, as it not only keeps the squad fresh but also builds depth for future competitions.

India will now turn its focus to the decisive tie against South Korea, where the level of competition is expected to rise significantly. The team will need its experienced players, including Ankita Raina, to step up alongside emerging talents like Zeel Desai and Sahaja Yamalapalli.
