Serena Williams and her doubles partner at Queen’s Club Champions, Victoria Mboko were supposed to compete against Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the quarter-final.

But Victoria Mboko sustained a knee injury after slipping during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday. She had to retire from the match and withdraw from the event.

This brought Williams’ journey to an end at the Queen’s Club WTA event as well. The pair had already won against Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe on Tuesday, nearly 4 years after Williams’ return.

The 44-year-old who has won 14 doubles Grand Slams, and 23 singles Grand Slams will continue her journey in Berlin next week and could get a wildcard for the Wimbledon Championships.

Speaking on her return, she explained, “For me right now, there are so many elements, you know. It’s really about the kids seeing me play. Olympia is a little bit older, Adira is very young. It’s components like that.

“It’s also, an athlete is the best thing you can be, in the highest place and having an opportunity to still be able to possibly do that one last time is kind of cool and exciting. And so there is a little bit of that too.”

She will next compete in the women’s doubles event at the Berlin Tennis Open, which begins on June 15 in Germany. Tournament organizers confirmed her participation, making Berlin the second tournament on Williams’ comeback calendar though confirmation is awaited on her doubles partner.
