WFI U-Turn on Vinesh Phogat’s Weight Category Before Asian Games 2026 Trials

Indian wrestling star Vinesh Phogat‘s much-anticipated return to competitive action was accompanied by uncertainty and administrative confusion on Saturday as questions over her eligible weight category dominated proceedings at the Asian Games 2026 selection trials in New Delhi. The trials, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium complex, were already under intense scrutiny following the Supreme Court’s recent decision allowing Phogat to participate. However, the focus quickly shifted from competition to eligibility after the former World Championships medallist was initially informed that she would not be permitted to compete in her preferred 53kg category.

Phogat, one of India’s most accomplished wrestlers and a two-time Asian Games medallist, arrived at the venue expecting to participate in the women’s 53kg division, a category in which she has enjoyed significant international success throughout her career. Shortly after reaching the stadium, however, she was handed a Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) circular that restricted her participation to the 50kg category.

The circular cited her most recent international appearances as the basis for the decision. “Since Ms. Vinesh Phogat represented India in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the Asian Olympic Qualifier in Kyrgyzstan, and the 4th Ranking Tournament in Hungary in the 50 kg weight category as an iconic player, and as she has not participated in any UWW event after the 2024 Olympic Games, the WFI has accordingly permitted her to participate in the selection trial in the 50 kg weight category,” the circular read.

The development created uncertainty among athletes, coaches, and officials present at the venue. For nearly an hour, it remained unclear whether Phogat would be able to contest the weight class she had intended to enter. Eventually, after discussions between officials and stakeholders, the wrestler was allowed to undergo the weigh-in process for the 53kg category, opening the door for her potential participation in that division.

Despite being cleared for the weigh-in, questions remained regarding the final category in which she would ultimately be allowed to compete, leaving the situation unresolved as the trials progressed.

The latest episode adds another chapter to a turbulent period in Phogat’s career. The wrestler has remained one of the most influential figures in Indian sport over the past several years, both for her achievements on the mat and her role in the athletes’ protest movement that brought governance issues within Indian wrestling into national focus.

Her return to the competition arena comes less than two years after the heartbreaking conclusion to her Paris Olympic campaign. At the 2024 Olympic Games, Phogat became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. However, she was disqualified ahead of the gold-medal bout after being found marginally over the prescribed weight limit during the official weigh-in, ending her hopes of securing an Olympic medal. The incident sparked widespread debate across the sporting world and remains one of the most discussed moments in recent Indian Olympic history.

Since Paris, Phogat has largely stayed away from international competition, making her participation in the Asian Games selection process a significant moment for Indian wrestling. The upcoming Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Japan in 2026, represent one of the most important events in the international wrestling calendar outside the Olympic Games and World Championships. The Supreme Court’s intervention earlier this week had cleared a major hurdle for the wrestler, allowing her to take part in the selection trials after legal proceedings surrounding her eligibility. That decision was expected to provide clarity ahead of the event. Instead, the weight category dispute introduced a fresh layer of uncertainty on the morning of the trials.

The situation also highlights the broader challenge athletes face when transitioning between weight divisions. Phogat has competed internationally in multiple categories throughout her career, including 48kg, 50kg, 53kg, and 55kg at different stages. Determining eligibility based on recent participation history can sometimes create administrative complications, particularly when athletes seek to return after extended breaks from competition.

For Indian wrestling authorities, the issue has attracted significant attention because of Phogat’s stature within the sport. A Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Asian Games champion, and multiple-time Asian Championships winner, she remains one of India’s most decorated female wrestlers and a key figure in the country’s medal aspirations at major international events.

As the trials continue, all eyes will remain on whether Phogat ultimately competes in the 53kg category and whether she can secure a place in the Indian squad for the Asian Games. While the Supreme Court ruling ensured her return to the selection process, the events of Saturday demonstrated that questions surrounding her competitive future are far from settled.

For now, the spotlight remains firmly on the veteran wrestler as Indian wrestling awaits clarity on the category in which one of its biggest stars will pursue another opportunity to represent the nation on the continental stage.
