Ahmedabad to Host 2029 Senior World Weightlifting Championships for First Time in India

India has secured a landmark opportunity to bring the world’s best weightlifters to its home soil, with Ahmedabad awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 Senior World Weightlifting Championships. The announcement by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) on Sunday, October 25, marks the first time India will stage the senior edition of the prestigious global competition, placing the country on a significant new stage in international weightlifting.

The decision was taken at the IWF Executive Board meeting in Ningbo, China, where the federation allocated hosting rights for four World Championships across 2028, 2029 and 2030. Ahmedabad will host the senior championships in 2029, while Moscow, Russia, has been selected to stage the 2030 edition. The 2028 calendar will feature two other major competitions. Prishtina, Kosovo, will organise the IWF World Youth Championships, while Caracas, Venezuela, will host the World Junior Championships.

The allocation reflects the federation’s efforts to establish its future competition calendar while extending the reach of international weightlifting to new host nations. IWF General Secretary José Quiñones welcomed the outcome of the bidding process, highlighting the significance of awarding major international competitions to countries hosting an IWF world event for the first time.

“All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the Championships in your respective countries will be a huge success. It is also worth noting that three of these four countries will be organising an IWF world event for the first time – Kosovo, Venezuela and India. This demonstrates our Sport is growing worldwide and the staging of our competitions is highly desirable for many nations around the planet.”

India’s selection is particularly significant because the senior World Championships represent the highest level of competition on the IWF’s annual international calendar outside the Olympic Games. The tournament brings together leading lifters from different nations to compete across weight categories, with performances in the snatch and clean and jerk determining overall standings.

For Ahmedabad, the award adds another major international sporting event to its growing portfolio and offers India an opportunity to showcase its organisational capabilities to the global weightlifting community. The hosting rights strengthen Ahmedabad’s position as a destination for major international sporting competitions. The city is also scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, making the 2029 World Weightlifting Championships an important opportunity to build organisational experience ahead of another major multi-sport event.

The decision follows a period of international weightlifting activity in Gujarat. Gandhinagar hosted the Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships in May 2026, providing the region with recent experience of staging a major continental competition. The award of the 2029 World Championships now takes that experience to the global level. The championship is also expected to carry significance for India’s preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Indian Weightlifting Federation president Sahdev Yadav said the 2029 event would serve as a qualifying competition for the Commonwealth Games, adding another competitive dimension to the hosting opportunity. India’s hosting breakthrough comes against the backdrop of a history that includes notable performances at the World Weightlifting Championships. Kunjarani Devi became the first Indian weightlifter to win a medal at the competition with silver in the women’s 44kg category in 1989.

Karnam Malleswari subsequently claimed world titles in 1994 and 1995, while Mirabai Chanu won the women’s 48kg world title in 2017. Hosting the championships will provide Indian athletes with an opportunity to compete in front of home spectators against the world’s leading lifters. It will also bring international attention to the country’s training systems, infrastructure and development pathways in the sport.

With the 2026 World Championships scheduled in Ningbo, China, from October 27 to November 8, the international calendar is already moving towards the next Olympic cycle and beyond. Ahmedabad’s 2029 assignment gives India a long-term target to prepare for, both on the competition floor and behind the scenes. Ahmedabad securing the 2029 Senior World Weightlifting Championships is more than a milestone for Indian sport.

It is an opportunity to connect international event hosting with athlete development and the long-term growth of weightlifting in the country. The real measure of success will extend beyond delivering a well-organised tournament. India will need to ensure that the event strengthens grassroots participation, supports its next generation of lifters and creates a lasting legacy for the sport.

With the 2030 Commonwealth Games also on the horizon, Ahmedabad has an opportunity to build continuity in its international sporting calendar. The challenge now is to turn hosting rights into a meaningful sporting legacy.
